Naw, a good plague or famine will cull the herd and the survivors can all start repopulating again.

the world is far too complex today than it was ever before. as such i think it is in its most vulnerable state ever. there are a number of issues that can become catastrophic that we are not working hard/fast enough to resolve:

- population growth
- environmental degradation
- nuclear war
- pandemics

I can't believe how many hippies are on ATOT.

That's kind of funny, considering your avatar. :p

OP: People have been sure the end was near for thousands of years. I doubt it's happening now.

And it already happened... Aztecs, Mayans, Egyptians... All seemingly advanced civilizations that suddenly disappeared... Did they find a way to go to space and move out of here? Did aliens come get their "child" and take them to other planets? Did they just kill each other off with rocks? Mmm....

They died off obviously.

But, the human race is still here. I guess those weren't really "end-times"

I think they might, but one thing's for sure, this is the defining century. It's either all or nothing, there won't be a middle ground.

We all know the world ends on 2014, when that massive asteroid is going to hit earth.

All you pansies worrying about this wouldn't have been able to handle the stress during the Cold War.

Every generation since the dawn of time has believed that the world would end within their lifetime. And guess what? They were right.

no not really. it's only now that we have begun to screw with the natural order of the world in a way never imagined before.

No really. Except a thousand or more years ago, the doomsayers would say that we would be punished for sinning against "God's will." "Natural order" or "God's will," it's the same thing.
And I'll say again, they were right. Your world won't live past this century. Everybody dies. Get over it.

Tis why no extraterrestrial intelligence has made itself known yet - violence is the natural order of things, and when a species becomes advanced enough, it finds new ways of causing destruction, to the point of self-annhialation.

Or maybe not.

I wonder what might happen in a world without heavier elements. As I understand it, elements heavier than iron require some kind of stellar explosion or implosion to form. What if a planet formed out of only elements as light as or lighter than iron? I can't see them producing any extremely devastating weaponry in as quick a timescale as we have. Even our fusion bombs rely on radioactive heavy elements to produce the temperatures and pressures to cause the fusion reaction. Maybe they'd advance enough by the time that powerful weapons were possible that they wouldn't feel so compelled to use them.

But with regards to humanity, I don't think we'll kill off all of humanity. Some small pockets will survive somewhere and eventually repopulate. As for a third world war happening, with nuclear weapons and all, I don't know if it will come to that. I certainly hope not, but then, leaders to sometimes tend to get a bit psychotic, and their people gullible. It's happened before, and it will happen again.

today's world is a very secular place. i'm not talking about the "natural order" of things in a religious way, so all the religious doomsayers are irrelevant.

tell me when have human beings ever exploited the natural resources of the world in this manner? never. when have we developed more powerful weapons before? never.

The formation of elements heavier than iron require a Type 1b or 1c supernova. Life (as we know it) could not exist without those heavier elements. I don't think that human violence has any bearing on advanced alien lifeforms visiting us or not. Like it or not, violence is a key component of evolution.

How are the religious doomsayers irrelevant when you sound just like them?

Your arguments are practically identical. "Has there ever been a more wicked generation than this one? Surely God will punish us!"

Wake up, pal.
