It's been brought up several times, but you keep ignoring it: name a significant contribution by a black person that is ignored in a regular history class. People that invent stoplights and refrigerated vehicles don't count.

When I took history I remember the story of Leopold and Lobe, as well as Rasputin. Now tell me how the hell did they get in history class, but the brother who developed the prototype for the gas mask didn't. And your a complete idiot if you think that refrigeration for long haul trucks wasn't significant. Most of our nation's shipping is done by truck, dummy.

I have no clue who Leopold and Lobe are, and Rasputin was only briefly mentioned late in my high school days. Maybe you just went to a bad school.

Gas masks and truck refrigeration do not belong in a general history class. Anyone who has the ability to think clearly can see this. Unfortunately for you, you're cursed with having to look through a "race filter" before you examine any issues. That's too bad.

I think the disproportionately high black prison percentage is an interesting phenomenon. The crime rate is unarguably higher among black males than among other racial/gender groups, but there's also no question that black men are subjected to far greater scrutiny in large cities than other people. That's a phenomenon I think many white people of privilege have a hard time understanding. Black men are frequently patted down and even arrested and charged simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There's obviously also a complex chicken-and-egg socioeconomic factor in these crime statistics as well.

Phenomenon my ass. The disproportionally large black prison population has primarily to do with drugs. For the most part I do not agree with the very draconian drug laws, though they cannot solely be blamed for the incredibly high black prison population. If blacks are being patted down and the authorities find something, then mabey they have reason to. I'm not saying they always do, and I definatly believe that they will scrutinize a black man more, but when they find that black person doing something wrong, what kind of message does that convey to the public. "If that policeman hadn't discriminated against me, then I would have gotten away with whatever I was doing". So you're black and you were caught comitting a crime, tough shit. It MUST be the white man keeping you down, he was forcing you to break the law.

I am not a white person of privilege, my family was no more educated or wealthy than the typical black family when they came over to America less than 100 years ago. My family and I took jobs and lived our lives the exact same way any other black family in america could have. I worked my way up to what I have from absolutly nothing. What is stopping any other typical black citizen from doing the same? The answer is THEMSELVES. They are holding themselves back, and blaming everyone else for it. Just like Bill Cosby said.

I've been hassled by the police, and arrested enough in my time to know that police are pricks no matter what color, creed or nationality you are. So you're black, big deal, you're still breaking the law. Statistics show that blacks break laws 2-3 times as much as a white citizen.

First of all show me this statistic, also dont you think a lot of law enforcement is predisposed and even conditioned to target minorities. I have lived near poverty stricken areas to one of the richest cities in the country. There is definitely a disparity here. White rich kids can get a slap on the wrist or a cop would probably look the other way a lot easier than some cop on the beat in the projects. Its like the project cops are on the prowl, looking for the next "young black thug" to arrest. Although this is not always the case, I think it is more truthful than not. Things are not always the way they seem my friend. Statistics can be skewed in so many different ways its ridiculous, look deeper my friend.

Ahh but the US Census is not taking into account the continued increase in minority growth. While the white population remains steady, the minority pouplation continues to increase yearly. That census is also 5 years old too. And if your dumbass found out that what I said was true, just a difference in time frame, how is that I am pulling it out of my ass?

You pulled the timeframe out of your ass. And yes, the census does take into account increased minority growth. I'll bet they know a lot more about projecting that sort of information than you do.

No it doesn't. The Census takes a certain time frame and then builds its numbers from that. But what it can't do is determine the rate of immigration as well as the changes that take place within a group. For instance more black males are starting to live pass 30. 5-10 years ago that number was lower. And your just mad so you harp on my 2 decades. But its ok, in my lifetime it will be like New York City everywhere. And it will be a thing of beauty.

Black history can be taught when going over 20th century history and politics (Civil Rights)

There is no need or use for Black History Month other than to mystify most people and single out a minority for some sort of pointless self-aggrandizement.

At one time I am certain that the need for a black history month was there. I am sure there were many schools that ignored historical african american figures, yes even the famous ones, in their curriculum.

Many of the lessons on MLK, malcolm X today probably resulted from the inclusion of a black history month.

Nowadays it is not so clear whether such a month is needed but it is political suicide to remove it and also it doesn't really do you any harm.

I mean, why is there an MLK day? shouldn't Lincoln have his own day instead of lumped with other presidents? He arguably did just as much to advance racial equality.

See what a slippery slope we get on once we think about removing black history month?

I for one see no advantage to having black history month around these days but at the same time, it does me no harm and I see no reason to remove it.

That's the whole point - a lot of people think that BHM needs to GO AWAY to continue to "bridge the racial gap".

Black History Month is necessary to outline the fact that blacks didn't get true rights for over 200 years of American history. Black History Month is pushing a certain group of people forward who haven't had a fair shake at attaining life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You want a Native American History Month? Sure. An Asian History Month? Sure. I'm sure the blacks won't complain. All the annoying little white boys will though. When you have a point come back to me.
