I dont like Black History Month

First of all show me this statistic, also dont you think a lot of law enforcement is predisposed and even conditioned to target minorities. I have lived near poverty stricken areas to one of the richest cities in the country. There is definitely a disparity here. White rich kids can get a slap on the wrist or a cop would probably look the other way a lot easier than some cop on the beat in the projects. Its like the project cops are on the prowl, looking for the next "young black thug" to arrest. Although this is not always the case, I think it is more truthful than not. Things are not always the way they seem my friend. Statistics can be skewed in so many different ways its ridiculous, look deeper my friend.
What statistic? A statistic that shows the majority of inmates are blacks? A simple search on google would net you these results.
Here is one. There are many more out there. It is common knowledge that the percentage of black inmates compared to the overall population of their race is vastly disproportionate to that of whites. No matter how many bs race cards you pull, thoes numbers arn't changing.

There are no skewing of results, there are cold hard facts that you cannot dispute. Why don't you ask our local law enforcement officers on this forum to see if they are predisposed to target minorities? My uncle was a police officer for 35 years, he patrolled and arrested all types of different people. He has no predisposition of racial targeting at all. I would wager to bet that the majority of his arrests were white middleaged men, for drug use or domestic violence. If there is a cop patrolling the projects, the chances of the people he encounters there partaking in illegal activity is MUCH higher than say in a more suburban setting.

Of course he is looking for the next young black thug, because thoes are the worthless, deadend youth that will fall into a life of crime and stay there because they are too damned lazy to do anything about their position in life. They glorify that lifestyle. They listen to music that glorifies that lifestyle, they dress in garb that glorifies that lifestyle, speak a language that glorifies that lifestyle and they partake in actions that fully cater to that lifestyle. Do you really expect a police officer or any other member of society to actually take these kids seriously?
My god, pull up your pants, put on clothes that fit, tie you're goddamned boot laces, speak proper english and get a frigging job so you can work your way up like the rest of society. It's that easy, but they won't do it because they don't want to. They think there is some magical other way of doing it. It boils down to pure laziness and an utter feeling of entitlement. Well if they are going to lead that lifestyle then they are entitled to one thing, a nice 6'x6' cell with 3 squares a day, courtesy of ME the honest hardworking tax payer.

I look very deep into these issues and I don't see any major changes, nor am I going to concede to the notion that "the white man is keeping the black man down".

The level of cultural awareness in this country is pretty low. Just look at the foreign language curriculum in our high schools compared to those of any developed country.

What's that got to do with cultural awareness? Do you have to speak a foreign language to learn about a foreign country?

it certainly helps. I doubt our knowledge of other country's history and culture can be called high. Just as an example, how many translated foreign authors did you read in your high school lit class?

I don't know, that was ten years ago. Why, how many did you read?
You don't have to read foreign novels in their native language to learn about foreign culture. That sort of thing should rightfully be saved for college, where specialized education takes place. When I lived in Japan as a boy, we had Japanese culture class, but it was all done in English so we'd benefit from actually being able to understand it.

I didn't say read it in their native language. that would be quite the accomplishment. I read quite a few foreign authors but that was only for the last year of my high school and only because I went to a better high school than most. In most high schools, the most foreign author they read is shakespeare.
Reading novels is not the only way to learn about a culture you are right, but it is one.

In addition there really is maybe 1 year of required world history in US high schools. Far too little in my opinion.

Ask high school students in the US who the president of France is or the chancellor of Germany is?

Now ask this question in any other developed country's high school.

I hope you don't retort with knowing the leaders of other countries does not lead to knowledge of their cultures.

If by influence you mean horribly violent influence then yes. I'm glad I got a racist comment out of you though.

That isn't a racist comment... Also, we *don't* have white history month. Show me a time where students only discuss white history. IIRC History class is tought by, get this it's an amazing concept, DATE.

BHM is the only time where history is taught according to race. This by definition make it RACIST.

If you justify BHM, your also justifying RACISM.

Take some time to wrap your head around that concept.
Take some time to wrap your head around the concept that our teaching is often biased/wrong and you don't get it because you are too oblivious to the facts to realize it.

History is cyclical. If the Indians didn't invent the numerals and the concept of zero we may not have had the math we do today. If the Chinese didn't invent gunpowder we may have not had guns. If the Arabs didn't dabble in Algebra and calculus we may have not had the advanced science we do today. Saying Europe is the end-all be-all is stupid. Europe is a very violent flash in the timeline. One can argue that the advent of Western power was the downfall of the rest of the world. The inequality of wealth in the modern world is a direct product of that.

Seriously, are you listening to yourself? You say that history classes are biased in one way because they focus only on the negatives of other civilizations, and yet you only seem to focus on the negatives of western civilization. Aren't you commiting the same "crime" that you accuse others of commiting?

Seriously dude, you're not helping.

Yes, other countries have something to do with history. I'm not saying it was racist, but I don't think that "No other area has change the world like Europe and its colonies" is an accurate statement.

We should drop this world history discussion, it's not relevant to BHM and was just a straw man Proletariat threw out there that we bit on.

NO ONE IS ANSWERING THESE TWO QUESTIONS.
Isn't BHM racist by definition?
Why should BHM exist?

Actually, I'll retort to that with asking any other developed country's high school if they know who the Governor of Texas is, or Oklahoma... that would be more analogous.

I'd like to see more world history taught in K-12 schools. They need to up the history and remove the computers (honestly, comp courses at high school are useless and really have no place there). In Canada, like the USA, most history is just focused on the founding of our country, a few big name leaders and then a big focus on the wars. It would be great if students had a more "worldly" knowledge (geography included).

Schools should teach five things and five things only IMHO:
Math
Science
History
Geography
Engrish

I find it interesting you don't believe financial education should be taught in our schools... I guess that's all the better for rich people though; the less financial education everyone else has, the further into debt they will drag themselves so that the rich can take advantage of that (not exploit... I honestly do not believe most rich people are greedy, or exploitative) and become even wealthier. Your kind of thinking should only help me build my businesses to even greater heights! :)

As a side note, if we're going to have Black History Month (Or African-American History Month, as it is called here at Pearl Harbor...), then I would like to please see German-American and French-American History month as well, to celebrate and honor my ancestors that have contributed to America.

Perhaps instead of bitching about how racist white people are on an Internet forum, you should go back to school and learn the difference between "you're" and "your".

I dont think they should have a whole month more like one day, have you heard of a president who has a whole month i sure havent. its because black people still think they are being misstreated that is stupid. i am sick of it everyday it happens like in LA a black kid who was in a gang steals a car 2 officers get out of there cars when the kid stop's thinking he is going to get out on his knee's they raise there guns the kid reverses using the car as a weapon to try to hit the officers what would you do? i would shot the kid in the back of the head i wouldnt even think about it. just because he is black and the officers are white they think its racism that is a load of horse Sh!t you know if the kid was mexican, azn, or white they wouldnt have this big huge thing about it.

i am not racist i do not judge a person by the color of there skin. but when stuff like this happens it really ticks me off. another thing is at my high school they have a black older man come in and say all this stuff about white people.

on tuesday my friend Brian was in class the teacher was a black Woman sub. my friend calls another person an idiot the laddy gets all mad. the teacher writes him a referal and says that he yelled the n word to 4 people. i was sitting right there and watching him have an argument with the teacher he did not say the n word and was no were near yelling at the lady. so he goes to the dean and talks to her he says he didint say that word. than she says do you know what the n word means and he said yes. he said do you know what the n word means. she says its what the White Monsters called the black people. by the way the dean is black if you didint already think so. He gets suspended for the day and has to walk home she did not let him call his mom or dad and he has to walk home in the rain is that right?

i just think its getting really old how they keep saying this they say it wasnt that long ago? is 500 years long? i think so.. the fact is there is not racism like there was yes there is some racist people in the world but if you think that cop shot the kid in the head because he was black ur just plain sad.

Way to prove my point, buddy! You summed it up even better than I did, seeing as you apparently weren't even aware that the word (it means 'fair' as opposed to 'equal', by the way) existed.

And I don't feel I need an entire month devoted to my history. I think my race has had it pretty damn easy. I'd sure as hell give the blacks a month, though.

Who cares. It's no sweat off my ass if there is a Black History month. I guess there are always those who need to snivel about something. Usually it's the fat pasty whites who are doing the sniveling..well at least here at ATOT. Maybe they would feel better if there was a month dedicated to Cheesecake and another dedicated to Kiddie Gamers.

There's way too many replies here for me to read through every one but I'll just add my 2 cents.

I think initially black history month was a good thing, black people in america have had a very negative image. They were viewed and treated as sub-human, ignorant, criminals, etc.. (they still are depending on who you talk to). So I think at the time it was started black history month was a way of trying to help others recognize some of the important contributions that black americans have made, kind of a way to level the playing field so to speak. However now its hard for me to say if it should still exist, although racism still exists its not nearly as bad as it was when black history month was first started.

Here in Toronto (the most multiculturally diverse city in the world) I've not seen one reference to it around campus or anywhere I've gone this month (mall, subway, etc)

I just see MuchMusic commercials that pretty much summarize black contributions as rap, jazz, soul, rock and a few other music genres.

I would LOVE to see White History Month. Strangely enough, blacks screaming racism would probably overrule it and get it taken away... only go to back and bitch about racism all through Black History month.
