Why the hell do you think you need a white history month?

If I hear one more person say "Don't blame me, it was my ancestors! *I* didn't own any slaves!" I'm going to e-murder you - that is not the point. What pisses me off is that you lot spout equality, equality, equality over and over again, yet you seem to have no notion of equity. You don't realise that fairness involves making some kind of concession - which you seem to be TOTALLY UNWILLING TO DO. And my GOD, it's one month where you have to give a little recognition. It makes me sick to hear people complaining about this - the merest of all mere inconveniences to make up for hundreds of years of the most vile treatment of human beings towards fellow human beings.

You, Nik, have no idea what you're talking about and feel slighted about nothing at all. I can't work out if it's just an act or not but you seem to bring this same crap into every thread on the subject. It just staggers my mind that you can be offended by this.

Oh my god. I cannot believe that this is even an issue, you selfish, snivelling twats. Go find something real to be offended about.
Why isn't there a month for every type of person ever enslaved in the world? Slavery isn't limited to white on black. I personally don't get "offended" by black history month, or any other religious or ethnic "holiday". I could really care less what someone celebrates.

The issue comes up with someone (you) think that you deserve an entire month devoted to your history. As you so gracefully put it, "why the hell do you need white history month?", I ask the same question, why he hell do you need black history month? Why isn't there jewish history month, or brown history month, or yellow history month?

You say that you want equality (which you apparently cannot spell ;) ) but want special treatment to "make up" for these horrible occurrences. How much special treatment do you need? Do you need to be constantly reminded that your people (or people of only your color) were treated? Does a month clearly driven by political correctness really satisfy that aching in your heart created by the injustices to people of your color in the past?
Must every non-black apologize profusely for the past until the end of time? What happend to the black people has happened to many other people in various other degrees. You want equality, stop expecting special treatment.

Bleh

You know seeming as Black people are still comming out of effects of hundreds of years of slavery. I think we can have a dam history month.

So when exactly will blacks stop using their color as a crutch? So many other ethnic groups have come to america and other places of the world, with a fraction of the wealth blacks have, and flourished. They don't make a stink about it, they don't play race cards at every possible stop, they just live their lives as a normal human should. How exactly do blacks differ from the rest of the world?

have no idea why this thread got so long..It's pretty self-evident IMO. Blacks and many whites felt/feel they got dissed in the history books and visa vi thier importantance to shaping America. Black parents and educators wanted to infuse more blackness into curriculum for thier children, and every child in fact regaudless or race. The primary modivation is self-esteem by showing important black fiqures/events for the children who are very impressionable.

That you don't like it I don't get really. I never gave it much thought until seeing this thread. I conclude educators know infinity more about education than I do therefore i suspect it's important.

Personally I think history should be taught independent of race. If somebody did something important, then he should be taught in history.
On the other hand, we shouldn't teach a otherwise not so important person just because his skin is a certain color.

ok, we abuse the cr@p out of Mexicans in this country should we have a mexican history month also?

We built the west off the broken back of a bunch of chinese, do they get even a day?

Remember how we treated the Japanese during WWII? Do they get a Japanese history day?

If you think what we did to black slaves was bad, look what we did to the native american indians. How many indians do you see crying out for a Indian Histry month?

I'd like to see more world history taught in K-12 schools. They need to up the history and remove the computers (honestly, comp courses at high school are useless and really have no place there). In Canada, like the USA, most history is just focused on the founding of our country, a few big name leaders and then a big focus on the wars. It would be great if students had a more "worldly" knowledge (geography included).

Schools should teach five things and five things only IMHO:
Math
Science
History
Geography
Engrish

Music, art and athletics are just as important. But with a name like Schrodinger maybe you dont understand.

Music and art are subjective to your own opinion. The curriculum I specified was a concrete and factual based education that focuses on topics everyone can agree upon. Why not leave art and music for the individual to discover?

Athletics in school? Thats a joke. It has no place at an institution of learning. In your own time, sure.

See its bs posts like this that just get under my skin. Who the fvck are you to suggest blacks use their color as crutch? What because you heard one black say something about race, now its all blacks? Look here if no good pos white people weren't fvcking racist and shut all the doors to oppurtunity, there would been no need for affirmative action or even civil rights or even black history month or black colleges or even BET. And by the way look in the mirror when you want pass judgement on blacks, because its people like you who are the culprits. You and your piss @ss forefathers. And you know what @sshole we are different. We are the only damn race in this country forced to live here, pissed on, women raped, men castrated, many blacks were used for human experiments because we were considered less than human, we were hung, murdered, set on fire, had dogs tearing at our flesh, knocked down with water hoses, had to eat and sleep seperate, fvcking signs hung up that said blacks had tails, had to get laws passed so we could vote, and etc. And in many damn cases we had wait 30 years for any justice and damn near almost in all cases not one single solidarity white person was ever brought to justice. This is all in last 35-40 years. You got a lot damn nerve to hang your sh1tty judgement on blacks. B1tch you probably ain't never even talked to black person. I guess because one whitey is in the KKK, I guess I can say all whites are KKK members. Some of you got a lot of nerve, but you know what, soon you'll be a legitimate minority, then I am going to see how much sh1t your going to to be talking then. I guess all middle eastern people are Taliban too, huh.

Give me some examples of oppertunities that was onoly shut off to blacks and not to asians, indians, mexicans, and other minorities. I find it hard to believe that this country goes out of its way to only pick on blacks and not the other minorities.

And by the way look in the mirror when you want pass judgement on blacks, because its people like you who are the culprits. You and your piss @ss forefathers. And you know what @sshole we are different.

So based on his post, how is he holding back black people?

We are the only damn race in this country forced to live here, pissed on, women raped, men castrated, many blacks were used for human experiments because we were considered less than human, we were hung, murdered, set on fire, had dogs tearing at our flesh, knocked down with water hoses, had to eat and sleep seperate, fvcking signs hung up that said blacks had tails, had to get laws passed so we could vote, and etc.

It's bad yeah, but mexican americans had to go through just about the same. Think about that for awhile.
Also, did any of the above happen to you? And how is that relevent to having a black history month? Wouldn't you agree that black people important enough to be in this history books should be taught in everyday history and not have a special month?

. You got a lot damn nerve to hang your sh1tty judgement on blacks. B1tch you probably ain't never even talked to black person. Man you just go on and on and on with the name calling. You mind slowing down and try using logic to explain what exactly do you have against his post. I yet to see you put up a single valid arguement other than you hate his post and think it's sh!tty.

even with black history month, I think a general lack of understanding about the role of blacks in American history.

So I think it's a good thing. We ought to have a Native American history month, and some sort of month or two that focuses on other ethnic groups.

There is no danger that so-called "white history" will be minimalized by doing so, but perhaps it will be better understood.

Overall, we ought to devote a lot more time to studying all kinds of history.

"This guy did this" and "this guy did that" will suffice.

The problem is that very many of the historical figures taught during Black History Month only get considered for inclusion in a lesson plan because there is a Black History Month in the first place. If left without that "quota", unfortunately very many of these figures never get any recognition whatsoever, though their contributions to society are just as important as some of those who are regularly taught.

It's a utopian hope that one day there will be no need for the special designation, but until such time that historical figures ARE given their equal due, it's the only way for many people (particularly those from less diverse regions) to get any knowledge of the culture's roots. Sadly, the imposed "quota" has the additional effect of making Black history even less palatable for some of the naysayers during the other 11 months of the year and causing intentional "stockpiling" for February, so in a strange way I do see it as not so much a step backward, but a guaranteed lack of a step forward.

Yep, it's a messed up situation for all.

Solid post.

its been about 137 years since the slavery ended....

and 40 years since the segregation ended....

MOVE THE FVCK ON.

Just because they're the minorities that came to america before any other race, and suffered some sh!t, doesn't mean they deserve a special month.
I mean everyone suffered through some sort of sh!t - either government enforced or some society-related crap (such as a black male beat up a white male, or a few asian gangsters stabbed some mexican guy to death, or mexican mobs decide to rob a 7-11 and shot an indian clerk)

sh!t happens, people are racist at different levels, welcome to reality.

AMEN! I am an African American and day in and day out I see this mentality exhibited by many of my Caucasian friends. When you don't have to live with racism and experience it, you are turned off by the mention of its occurrence. If these people had to go through life with rammifications of Slavery and stereotypes proported by society then it would be a different story. They would understand what it means to be a minority and how it feels to be subjected in this way. We all know that other people in this country, ESPECIALLY NATIVE AMERICANS deserve more recognition than they get, but wouldnt this mean admitting wrong doing in the first place. Hey! We came here, took your land, killed all your people, now the handful that are left, we give you free college and casinos, What more can you want?, a History Month like the blacks?!?! The hell you say!!?! lol. The reason African Americans have a month I believe is because of the Civil Rights movement more than anything. Native Americans have such meager political power that they will probably never get the recognition they deserve.

Also, my mom is a teacher and sees widespread contention from the Caucasian teachers about Black History Month. Like they would include it in their lesson plans if they didnt have to? This coming from educators really shed some light into how little some people want to embrace or accept the fact that minorities and African Americans in specific made significant contributions to the country (e.g. stories like HBO's Something the Lord Made). People, OPEN YOUR FREAKING MINDS!!! STEP OUT OF YOUR LITTLE MICROCOSMS OF EXISTENCE and realize something is better than nothing as far as learning about African American history, even if it is flawed in its current "Black History Month" state. Maybe we should mandate a % per race or something because in its current form the "American History" is being told in a flowery half-truthed manner.

You are correct by your own admission. Clearly you (and several other here) don't get it, though my would-be ATOT allies in this discussion aren't doing the best job of discouraging the flame wars.

There's no law that says Black History Month has "to show off 'look at what white men did to us'"... it's primarily WHITE MEN writing the textbooks and producing the educational shows, and generally making decisions (at the governmental level) on lesson plans and syllabi! Show the other aspects of Black History, as there is MUCH more to tell than just slavery and racism, and include these important contributions to OUR COLLECTIVE HISTORY on a regular basis! Same for every group's history as it pertains to America's.

I'm not rewriting what I've already posted twice in this thread. I encourage you to search for my opinions I gave earlier on.

I never understood this either. How come there isn't a Hispanic History month, or an Indian history month, or an Asian history month?

It might've already been mentioned, but really, why don't we have an Native American month? I mean really, of all the people this country has fvcked over through the years, the Native Americans surely deserve it, and frankly, their history ties in the strongest with America, since it was originally their land.

While I agree with you in concept, unfortunately the answer is not the dedication of months, as that only leads to more separatism in the lesson plans for the remaining calendar months. The answer lies in a re-dedication to teach ALL aspects of ALL history in a consistent manner. If you actually read OP's post instead of just the sensationalized (when taken out of context) title, you'll realize this is their point as well.

The reason Black History Month was created was to provide a vehicle for aspects of Black history to be chronicled and remembered at all, as back in the early part of the century when it was conceived as "Negro History Week" all of the stereotypical figures you always hear about nowadays during February like Frederick Douglass and George Washington Carver had relatively ZERO exposure for their roles in history. They simply were not written into any history books produced by the white majority.

Critical to this point is the understanding that in many fronts, there must exist a hardline right-wing and a hardline left-wing in order for a moderate middle-ground to exist. We are only now approaching that moderate middle-ground when it comes to educational equity in history lessons, but this will only be reached once enough decision-makers decide Black history points--inclusive of, but certainly NOT limited to, slavery, racism, etc.--are important enough to be taught as an integral part of a lesson plan instead of a separate "module".
