Why the hell do you think you need a white history month?

If I hear one more person say "Don't blame me, it was my ancestors! *I* didn't own any slaves!" I'm going to e-murder you - that is not the point. What pisses me off is that you lot spout equality, equality, equality over and over again, yet you seem to have no notion of equity. You don't realise that fairness involves making some kind of concession - which you seem to be TOTALLY UNWILLING TO DO. And my GOD, it's one month where you have to give a little recognition. It makes me sick to hear people complaining about this - the merest of all mere inconveniences to make up for hundreds of years of the most vile treatment of human beings towards fellow human beings.

You, Nik, have no idea what you're talking about and feel slighted about nothing at all. I can't work out if it's just an act or not but you seem to bring this same crap into every thread on the subject. It just staggers my mind that you can be offended by this.

Oh my god. I cannot believe that this is even an issue, you selfish, snivelling twats. Go find something real to be offended about.

Or Brooke Burke...she's not exactly a nerd, but I'm sure lots of people would come to the conventions!

The blacks are not getting screwed. Its not black month its black HISTORY month.
If they're not dead, fvck 'em. If they are dead then let's shut up and learn something.

I would also like to see white, yellow, brown and red history month. But that would be racist so we cant do it.

ARIANS. "pure-bred" blond, blue-eyed white people? Hence Sieg HEIL?

Houston...we have a problem. That last shipment of mockery just missed target. It flew right over his head and he never even saw it coming.

What effects? Last I checked, blacks have all the rights of any other race in America.

And I think it really depends on where you are. I live in the most affluent black majority county in the USA. Black people here are doing fine... and doing lousy... it just depends on the environment they were brought up in. When I was in the Army I knew a number of black soldiers who were constantly teased and ridiculed by other black soldiers BECAUSE THEY SPOKE PROPERLY AND WERE WELL READ! As long as that sort of atmosphere pervades FROM THE INSIDE, making external showings like Black History Month are just putting a coat of paint on a building that's falling down.

Bill Cosby has it right.

If people want to be treated as equals in society, they must become equal. Equal in accepted speech in the business world. Equal in behavior. Equal in respect (no BET off color jokes about other races being ok). Equality is a nice thing to talk about and to use as a generalization, but to be truly equivolent in a society, one has to be personally equivolent to the current position held by others. So long as any effective percentage of the black population is actively engaged in keeping other blacks down, there will be less progress regardless of "feel good" efforts like MLK Day or BHM.

can o' worms in right, but oh well, ill get involved.

this is reverse racism, which just happens to be the same thing. just like black people getting better college grants because of this opressed past.

black history is just american history and need treated as such. asians do not have their own month for history, nor do indians. you may argue that 11 months of white history is unfair, but it is A) not labeled white history B) mixed with other cultures like histpanic and indian, as well as black.

black history month elevates black history in an unfair way. i think it should be changed from black history to american freedom month or something, and highlight all of the injustices and victories for freedom including the black freedom movements of the past and also about asian repression during WWII, and colonial days and the fight for freedom, and the american indians repression and so on.

black history month doesn't do justice to history because it does not help us understand our shortcomings to improve our future, it just celebrates a single group's hardship.

to be clear, the blacks are highest on the list of oppressed people in america, followed by the native americans, but black history month ALMOST makes a point of NOT recognising the sins against other races and peoples.

the point that I did not oppress people and in fact my ancestors did not either means that i dont have to pay a little respect for hundreds of years of vile treatment. in fact, most people alive today that are bitching about the treatment of their race were not alive to witness this just like the current generations are not responsible for the acts of other poeple a hundred years ago.

I DO NOT NEED TO BE INCONVENIENCED to make up for
hundreds of years of the most vile treatment

i am not responsible and my family did not own slaves.

As far as I can tell, one of the main reasons for it being there is so that we can all "learn and remember" what the Black's have done, etc. I agree that we should learn about the accomplishments/struggles/contributions/etc that blacks have made, but there doesn't need to be a Black history month in order to do so. Like many people in this thread have said already, we should learn about all races and cultures throughout the year.

Seems to me it is Black "history" because the blacks haven't done much recently for themselves or any one else. Sorry to put it that way , but it's true. With community development and support as you find in most of the other ethinc centers in this country , they would be one hell of a power to be reckoned with politically and financially.
I am for reform not racism , but it takes the cooperation of the reformee first.
Before someone asks , yes I do think that means the black man has to "reform" (change), but as that happened, the opinions and actions of others would also change. A certain level of civil conformity is necessary for a society to exist. Look at the past in this country. Irish,Italian,Korean,Japanese,Laotian(sp)..Cambodian..Vietnamese,Bosnian and citizens of many other countries have come here in mass and been able to overcome the difficulties of racism and secularism here. What is the problem? Why don't we have a Korean month or Vietnamese month or, considering the "bomb", a japanese month? If you have to ask , you have your head in a place that wouldn't allow you to read the answer anyway.

I have a suggestion to go with this rant. Pick black childern at random and have them read the dialogue of all productions for television during this period. Then some one will be getting the education and the pride involved to doproduce them.

why not a native american month, hell they got screwed even worse. or a jewish history month. this is all such a load of crap.

I'd like to see more world history taught in K-12 schools. They need to up the history and remove the computers (honestly, comp courses at high school are useless and really have no place there). In Canada, like the USA, most history is just focused on the founding of our country, a few big name leaders and then a big focus on the wars. It would be great if students had a more "worldly" knowledge (geography included).

Schools should teach five things and five things only IMHO:
Math
Science
History
Geography
Engrish

Music, art and athletics are just as important. But with a name like Schrodinger maybe you dont understand.
