Why do we need one specific month devoted to Black History? Shouldnt it be taught to students year round intertwined with European History et al?
Exactly. Black history is just as important as European and American history.
Except that there's practically nothing to teach.
If by Black History you're referring to African history, then it's pointless to teach that to kids at an age younger than specific high school or college courses. Countries they're not familiar with and laws/languages/cultures they are unable to comprehend along with names they aren't able to pronounce? That doesn't work well for children. Wait until they're old enough and deicde they want to learn more about world history so they can actually appreciate what they're being taught instead of being force fed crap they don't need to know because some people feel that children should be taught irrelevant material.
If by Black history you mean Blacks throughout American history, then it's already being taught. Sad to say but, there weren't too many famous black people before 1800 because society wouldn't put them in such positions. Once you get into the slavery controversy, etc, etc, civil rights, then things start to equal out in terms of racial significance in history. Most students don't learn about that material until later in their educational careers either.
This whole ____ History month thing is crap. We've been teaching kids the same fundamentals for years now until they reach a certain age and make decisions themselves. We shouldn't cater our educational system to the bleeding hearts of America. Teach people what's relevant and what they need to know. Once they get to a point where they can make their own decisions, have at it.
The entire educational system and what's being done/taught there needs to be entirely revamped.
