I don't get the success of Pawn Stars.

Why do people like this show? It's currently the highest rated reality show.

It always starts the same way. Somebody walks in with an item that they think is worth x amount of dollars. Rick will never make the deal on the spot, because he needs to bring in an expert. The expert comes in and tells Rick what he thinks it's worth, and usually it's way lower than what the person was asking. The person either walks away, or makes a deal that benefits only Rick.

I think the show stinks. Sure, you can learn a little history about the item. I guess it makes good entertainment. My dad likes it.

BTW, Chumlee is one lucky mofo. Supposedly he makes $25k an episode. His net worth is $5m. Damn. 🙁

I still watch it, but it's not as good as when it started. People can call "fake" and all that BS... I don't care, that's not why I watch it. The whole point (and only reason it's on the history channel) is to learn about the item itself. You get a little tidbit about why a certain bolt shouldn't be found on a gun of that time period, or other things like that. Once they started buying modern sports cars and shit the whole history/interesting side went out the window.

I couldn't give less of a shit what the item is worth, or that the guy selling it is actually an actor

It's like an entertaining reality TV show version of Antiques Roadshow. I haven't watched it for several seasons now but I really enjoyed watching the episodes when they were on TV. People brought in some interesting things and I like hearing about the history of the items. I could do without the "Family Drama"...but I don't mind it.

when i watch pawn stars, it's usually about 8-10 minutes worth of tv because i just fast forward through all the stupid chumlee drama, as well as any of the family "drama"

Rick and Chumlee are pretty funny and you learn a bit of history in it. I did like it better when they didn't make up stupid storylines though and just focused on buying things.

I've never seen it, but I had a month-long obsession with Storage Wars at one point. I found it very entertaining, so I assume people who watch Pawn Stars find it entertaining.

I came in to say exactly this.

Storage wars is compleeeetely fake and ridiculous.

Pawn Stars may be fake, but I think there is quite a bit of genuine reality in the specific pieces we get to view (whether or not the person really is bringing it in to sell it, etc.)

Yeah but storage wars has brandi

I hear the stars of this show are too big for their britches now and are never at the store anymore.

I enjoyed the history of it but i am sure that left the show shortly after it was a success. The main guy has a podcast now I have heard advertised. There is no way i would listen to him!

Don't care, I liked seeing the shit in the lockers. Of course the fakeness is why the love affair did not last.

New on Discovery this fall, it's "We Film People Doing Boring Jobs while Injecting Scripted Fake Drama", Fridays at 8pm.

Now, if we were comparing Pawn Shop vs Hardcore Pawn I think Hardcore is the better show. I like the interactions between the people who come in and try to con Seth and Ashley. It just seems more spontaneous and realistic. I know it's probably scripted like Pawn Shop, but I don't think they go overboard.

My dad really likes Gold Rush. It's kinda crazy that Parker is only 19 years old., and he's worth about $1m.

I like Pawn Stars. They usually have some interesting stuff that comes in and Rick and the rest of the characters are likeable and entertaining to watch.

I'm not familiar with it, but rarely you see a reality TV star as an interesting person. One of the exceptions is Adam Savage of Mythbusters. He is a genuinely interesting person and has spawned off quite a few cool things from his fame.

It's just way too scripted "reality". Hardcore Pawn is even worse.

I'm not not naive and think that there is any reality TV that is 100% real, but I think some are more real than others. At least in a show like Survivor, or The Amazing Race, there is an element of reality in the competitions.

Things like Pawn Starts, Hardcore Pawn, Storage Wars, Bubbas Repo Serive (or whatever that one is called) aren't even "reality" shows, they are re-enactments of *possible* situations that may or may not have happened.

*shrugs* Those types of shows are usually entertaining to me (at first). They usually start off being honest enough the first couple seasons, then they start trying to spice things up and it all falls apart. It's entertaining to see how things are done in certain industries.

Why do people like this show? It's currently the highest rated reality show.

People love watching morons on TV. Makes them feel smarter. (And actually, that's pretty much the basis of ATOT, when you come down to it.)

When you have a formula that works, you stick to it, right? What difference does it make that every episode is identical? Ever watch "Cops"? Every show, every incident is roughly the same, and they've been doing it for more than 25 years.

I don't think it's that they're "too big for their britches" it's just a popular show and people kept flooding in just to see them (and not buy anything). Believe it or not there's still a business to run that the other employees there depend on, so a bunch of people coming in just to chat with somebody they saw on TV fucks with that business.

The hell do you expect them to do?

it's basically because it's a modern day antiques road show. people love when someone hits the jackpot. also gives them hope when they look at the junk in the attic.
