I'm not familiar with it, but rarely you see a reality TV star as an interesting person. One of the exceptions is Adam Savage of Mythbusters. He is a genuinely interesting person and has spawned off quite a few cool things from his fame.

Yeah, if you subscribe to Tested on Youtube he has some seriously awesome stuff/hobbies.

The drama stuff is stupid and sucks, but I like the history parts where items are evaluated by the local experts.

I don't think it's that they're "too big for their britches" it's just a popular show and people kept flooding in just to see them (and not buy anything). Believe it or not there's still a business to run that the other employees there depend on, so a bunch of people coming in just to chat with somebody they saw on TV fucks with that business.

The hell do you expect them to do?

I am basing my opinion on the other workers who my bro in law spoke to. He is a fan and they stopped by the store.

when i watch pawn stars, it's usually about 8-10 minutes worth of tv because i just fast forward through all the stupid chumlee drama, as well as any of the family "drama"

It seems they have added more and more of this, and it really turned me off from the show. I want to see more pawning and less drama. They are all terrible actors when it comes to the little "side show" that they include now.

I liked the show the first few seasons for the historical aspects. They really started putting the characters in the spotlight season 3 or 4. Really turned me off the show.

I like American Pickers also for the same reason, seeing the old stuff and learning the history.

There needs to be a balance between the characters and the item. I watch Antiques Roadshow once in a while which is almost solely based around the item, but it is kind of boring.

yeah the new episodes hardly have any actually items in it compared to what they used to have. i definitely don't watch it nearly as much anymore.

I like both Pickers(there is a Canadian Picker for US friend) a lot more, they travel to England, to Italy, all over the NA. In the snow, in the dirt and meeting real people.

And they looks passionate.

The couple of episodes I've seen were pretty interesting. In the ones I saw someone brought something in that they thought wasn't worth much and the expert told them it was worth a lot, so it does go the other way sometimes.

and the employees who are working but NOT getting rich and famous are totally going to have fair opinions of them... right?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just pointing out there's good reasons they don't hang out at the shop anymore. It can be bad for business.

What did your bro-in-law buy?

New on Discovery this fall, it's "We Film People Doing Boring Jobs while Injecting Scripted Fake Drama", Fridays at 8pm.

lol thats all of them.

Watching wale wars is endless quick cuts of people looking astonished at each other while nothing happens.

The stupid mountain man shows are soooo fake.

I just read this...

The guys can't actually work the counter anymore because of privacy laws. Since they've become celebrities, people are constantly taking pictures of them, compromising the privacy of whoever's at the pawn counter. "Now I'll meet a guy in the hallway," said Corey.

Fake as hell for many / most items and scenarios. I liked it for the unusual item historical information, but stopped watching when the fake scenarios kept getting more and more silly. They think that stuff makes the show more interesting

I loved it early on - it combined the educational and dramatic elements of Antiques Roadshow with some likable personalities and the heightened (if sometimes fake) drama that the item would actually be purchased. The last couple of seasons have suffered mightily, though, from their need to inject obviously scripted "banter" and fake drama between the cast members. I always fast-forward through that stuff, but it has greatly reduced my enthusiasm for the show as a whole.

Do customers ever pawn anything? Seems like it's always sales.

If you loan somebody money and hold onto their collateral usury laws restrict the interest rate you can charge. If you buy it from them wholesale you can give them exclusive right to buy it back retail for some time period and since you're not charging them interest you don't have to worry about the usury law.

Now, if we were comparing Pawn Shop vs Hardcore Pawn I think Hardcore is the better show. I like the interactions between the people who come in and try to con Seth and Ashley. It just seems more spontaneous and realistic. I know it's probably scripted like Pawn Shop, but I don't think they go overboard.

You have got to be kidding. Hardcore Pawn is way overboard with unrealistic reactions like they are performing for a Jerry Springer audience. At least, it was that way with the couple episodes I saw when the show was new.

I saw someone pawn something one time on the show, I think the terms were pretty crazy, something like 30% due in 30 days.
