Every state and local agency has received my resume in the area. My main problem is that right now with the economy companies are able to hire people with 2-3 years experience at lower salaries. They have no incentive to take a chance on recent grads with less than a years real world experience.

Hmmmm, so there's an unfulfilling job opening at Sears in Raleigh... be right there! ;)

My wife would LOVE to move to the Winston-Salem or Raleigh-Durham area. I'm about ready for a not-so-demanding job to finish out my "career". Career! Hah!

I used to work at Sears 25 years ago, as did many friends. One of them is now in charge of security for a whole region. I kind of hoped there would be other positions besides sales available. Hell, I'd rather stock shelves than sell sh|t. I know they've REALLY cut down on full time positions. Could I make ends meet in Winston-Salem as a part time greeter at Walmart? :D

Keep trying dude, adopt a kick-ass take no prisoners attitude and MAKE things happen. When you're in an interview and they tell you that you don't have enough experience turn on the high pressure sales tactics. You may not have as much experience as some of the other applicants but you drive the point across that you LOVE programming, you're eager to show off your talent, you don't mind working late or on weekends. Make the interviewer remember you.

If you have a problem even getting interviews try a more aggresive approach, not only send your resume but follow it up with calls and visits to the office if possible. Persistence is a powerful force that many people don't take advantage of. It seems kind of akward at first and you might feel like you're being a nuisance but that's OK, your goal is to let the prospective employer now that you are highly motivated and you'll kick ass if you can get the job.

Now get out there and kick down some doors and get your job dammit!!! Thats an order!!!

When I was just working part-time and live a pretty simple, comfortable life(I talking about never more than $16k a year), I always wondering what it would be like to have a 9-5 job and making decent money and having all that money to spend.
Well, I make pretty good money now but I absolutly hate my job.
The economy is in such a shamble that it scares you to find something new.

YES, Im a manager at McDonalds....imagine what that is like.
I had already put in my notice when they convinced me to be store manager.
It was just too good to pass up with the economy right now. I'm going to be stuck here for another 2+ yrs.

Walmart is ALWAYS hiring :) That is a place I plan on putting an application into.

I was one of the only full-time people besides management at my sears. They hire mostly part-time people so they don't have to deal with benefits. The only reason they gave me full-time is because I had a completely open schedule. I agreed to work any hours. Another reason I quit is because Sears has had to cut back hours because of the economy so all the other part-timers didn't get any hours. Since I hated the job and they actually wanted the hours, I figured that now was the time to quit. I liked all of the people I worked with. But that isn't really a surprise. I have always gotten along with everyone I work with. I am pretty much a laidback type of guy.

The Raleigh area is AWESOME because you have all the benefits of a big city but once you get outside the beltline you can go into the country side. I love the area. I just moved up here in July on my search for a computer related job.

I got my degree at Clemson University and I grew up in a small town so I never wanted to live in a REALLY big city so Raleigh is a nice compromise especially if I could find a good job.

In my short life here are the places and jobs I have done:
Bi-lo bag boy
Home Depot Garden Expert :)
Toys R Us Maintenance man
Computer Lab Monitor
Hewlett Packard Sales Rep.
In Home wiring man(wired telephones and cat5 networks)
PC Technicial Support
Hewlitt Packard Sales Rep.
and finally Sears shoe salesman

I am thinking of applying at a Pet Store because I love animals, I just don't know how much I will like cleaning up their poop.

Ornery if you ever want to visit and want someone to show you around, I will be more than happy to do so. Of course I would have to bring along my fiancee because after 6 months I still get myself lost.

Don't rule out jobs not in your field of study from college. I almost took a job working as a claims rep for an insurance company after I was laid off because I wouldn't have been able to support my family with unemployment checks from the government. Fortunately, a job offer from elsewhere came.

But don't rule out jobs in other fields like sales, insurance, etc. You have to hit everybody. Don't forget to talk with temp hiring agencies either.

Good luck

If I was ruling out other jobs I wouldn't have been at sears :)

I have been hitting up temp agencies around here and about 5 or 6 have put applications into places trying to get me placed. Nothing has come of it.

The only thing allowing me to quit was the fact that my fiancee is in grad school so she is making 18K a year. It isn't a lot but we will manage.

My only lead right now is that my boss back at my college job transfered so they will be hiring a new person. I hope I might be able to get that job. It doesn't look good but I have to hope I can land it. It would be nice to be a manager in a college environment.

Wife is in the same boat as you. She quit end of Decemeber and is still looking. One of the recruiters said that they expected to be hiring in June. She registered with 5 different temp services and has yet to receive a phone call from any of them. She has a 4 yr degree and has 10+ years of experience in hr/office/project type work.

Good luck...

If it were me, I would have not quit until I had something lined up, especially in this economy.

Well if push comes to shove, I can go flip burgers somewhere. It won't be much of a step down from what I was doing. And I would probably make more money :)

"if you ever want to visit and want someone to show you around, I will be more than happy to do so..."

Wow, how generous. Thank you!

I'm not even going to mention this to my wife, or she'll be packing her bags! I think I'll have to wait till the economy starts picking up. I've still got over 6 months of unemployment left to hash things over. No idea at the moment what kind of work I want to do. 25 years in a shop was enough. I'm moving on to something else...

Thanks again for that offer, Jim!

Right our of college I worked in a restaurant serving food with a engineering degree :(. Finally I was lucky enough to land a job in a construction firm making over 3x what I use to. keep your chin up.

If your job is making you miserable, you are not hurting yourself by quitting.
;)

I am looking for a FRENCH citizen husband to marry and have children with, so it looks like we both have our work cut out for us. Good Luck to YOU

how the hell do you people live on unemployment? My unemployment would be barely enough to pay my rent in the Bay Area. Its ridiculous....
On other hand, i dont intend to stay unemployed for a long time. I still have hope and experience to boot it..

That's easier said than done. It's very difficult to find another job because you are currently working during the prime hours of emplyment seeking. I don't think his current job would take kindly to him taking hours off every day for a job search.

"...how the hell do you people live on unemployment? My unemployment would be barely enough to pay my rent in the Bay Area."

Cost of living here is VERY good. Cost of living in the Winston-Salem area is also VERY good. It's a big consideration to me, as far as where I intend to live. It also pays to keep the overhead manageable. For example, I've never purchased a new car in my life, and probably never will. My wife is working full time, which doesn't pay too much, but the benefits, which include health care, are a big plus.

If I were Jim, I'd be staying right there in that same area, too!

My advice would just be persistent at looking for a job. Keep sending those resumes. Try to talk to people when you're out of the house. You never know the guy standing in front of the grocery store is some type of boss and needs somebody to fill a position that is soon to be vacant.
Good luck :)
