Man, you could have made a move at Sears. Having your foot in the door, and making contacts is huge! There are so many unmotivated kids working there, it wouldn't have been too hard to work your way into a more lucrative spot, if not at that store, another. Might not be a bad idea to see if that HR person could work on that. Of couse, they have the upper hand now, but it's worth a shot.
Actually that was my plan all along Ornery. BUT looking at the situation at the store and what opportunities that were coming available, I didn't have much choice. I do not like sales jobs. I have done quite a few in my time. I would be 40 years old before I would get out of the sales type job at Sears. The managers at Sears have to still work on the floor. I don't want to do that. Trust me, my boss, who was AWESOME, and I had talks about it. She knew that I didn't like sales but she also knew I was a hard worker. Trust me I know the place is full of people that don't work. I had to pick up their slack everyday of the week.
Even if I got a managers job tomorrow it would still not make me happy. I like jobs that involve thinking. Management at sears would only mean more money which is high on my list of what I like but if I am not happy at all doing the job then more money won't help.
As for what I am looking for:
I have 2 years as a PC technician at my old university so any computer tech job would be cool.
Since my degree is in computer science I would like to program. I prefer backend coding. I don't get all excited about creating cool looking GUIs or things like that. Every group project I was involved in, I would do a majority of the backend coding for the application. I like getting down and dirty without having to worry about making GUIs.
While working at Sears I have been doing some consulting work for an apartment complex out of Atlanta designing a phone billing system. I hope it leads to some job opportunities.
I am willing to work for 25K a year as a programmer just because that is what I enjoy. I hate waking up every morning hating my job. Having a job that makes me happy is more important than making lots of money.
I have been constantly sending out resumes and emailing people for 6 months trying to get a programming job. The market in Raleigh is just really rough right now.
Overall I just want a job that requires using my head instead of making me bored all day long.
