I have working as a Sears shoe salesman since November. I am an out of work computer science grad. I just couldn't handle going to work and making $6.50/hour. I made good money over the holidays but since then my commission has been dropping dramatically. I was at work for 2 hours this morning and I didn't make a sale. Yesterday for my 6 hours of work, I pulled in $5 in commission.

How I need to find another job. I just couldn't take that place any longer without making some money.

Once again I am unemployeed, this time by choice.

Go to Radio Shack. At least you can have the illusion that you are working in the computer field. :D

Now to figure out how I am going to pay my bills until I find a job........

Yes, all my friends had their fun with the Al Bundy jokes for 3 months now.

It was funny when I quit because the HR person was like, "You just had a review that said you were an excellent employee."

I responded saying that just because I do my job well doesn't mean I like it.

Maybe you should look through the employment section and try to find a real job. This is not meant as an insult, but be persistant. If you are a good comp. sci person, go after the good jobs and tell them that you are really eager to get started and you're excited about the field. Or just find a place that looks like fun and just apply. See what happens. Good luck

Is there anything that will prevent you from getting another job?

You could do, just gotta to some leg work and you'll be right back in it,

only this time, seek out jobs that will caputure your enthusiasm and interest....Good luck.

yeah...that was stupid. you should always have a new job before you quit your current one. 6.50 an hour is better than 0.00 an hour until you find a new job.

If your job is making you miserable, you are not hurting yourself by quitting. Just try to find a new job ASAP until you can find the job you really want.

There's a limit to how much money you can make and still bear working at a job you hate. Mine is <pinky finger to lips> One Million Dollars!

PERSISTENCE - thats all you need to know. There are always gonna be more talented and smarter guys but the key to getting work when its scarce is knocking on the same doors if you have to over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

you get the point:D

Man, you could have made a move at Sears. Having your foot in the door, and making contacts is huge! There are so many unmotivated kids working there, it wouldn't have been too hard to work your way into a more lucrative spot, if not at that store, another. Might not be a bad idea to see if that HR person could work on that. Of couse, they have the upper hand now, but it's worth a shot.

I know tons of talented people who would kill for A job with decent money, myself included.

Actually that was my plan all along Ornery. BUT looking at the situation at the store and what opportunities that were coming available, I didn't have much choice. I do not like sales jobs. I have done quite a few in my time. I would be 40 years old before I would get out of the sales type job at Sears. The managers at Sears have to still work on the floor. I don't want to do that. Trust me, my boss, who was AWESOME, and I had talks about it. She knew that I didn't like sales but she also knew I was a hard worker. Trust me I know the place is full of people that don't work. I had to pick up their slack everyday of the week.

Even if I got a managers job tomorrow it would still not make me happy. I like jobs that involve thinking. Management at sears would only mean more money which is high on my list of what I like but if I am not happy at all doing the job then more money won't help.

As for what I am looking for:

I have 2 years as a PC technician at my old university so any computer tech job would be cool.

Since my degree is in computer science I would like to program. I prefer backend coding. I don't get all excited about creating cool looking GUIs or things like that. Every group project I was involved in, I would do a majority of the backend coding for the application. I like getting down and dirty without having to worry about making GUIs.

While working at Sears I have been doing some consulting work for an apartment complex out of Atlanta designing a phone billing system. I hope it leads to some job opportunities.

I am willing to work for 25K a year as a programmer just because that is what I enjoy. I hate waking up every morning hating my job. Having a job that makes me happy is more important than making lots of money.

I have been constantly sending out resumes and emailing people for 6 months trying to get a programming job. The market in Raleigh is just really rough right now.

Overall I just want a job that requires using my head instead of making me bored all day long.

I agree I hate my job too - with a passion. Its not the job itself but the people. They suck and blow! Ive been there 11+ years, have earned 4 weeks off a year and make in the mid 30s. I figure I could actually enjoy my life doing something I like but I wont make squat for money, or I could do the same job somewhere else, but make less money and go back to two weeks off a year! That aint gonna happen.

Well I am 24 years old that just graduated from college last May. If I had invested a lot of time and money into a job then that would be different.

The people I worked with at Sears were the only thing that was nice. My boss was awesome and I really hope she can move up in the company. I just hated the job and don't want to continue down a path that will make me unhappy.

Try to look for government jobs. A career advisor at my school said that government agencies are always hiring in many different fields. Thats what Im gonna have to start looking into soon.
