Very interesting engine design. I imagine it's pretty cramped in that valve cover with the valves, injectors, and now part of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Just looking at it says it's cramped. Other sites have stated that the engines that are being lab built will be run in vehicles for 2 years before they go on full production. I know it's not much, but a diesel with that kind of power and 23-25MPG would be awesome.

Now if they'll only put that 4.5L Diesel into the Malibu! That'd be awesome!!!!

That's an awesome design. GM engineers really are some of the best around.

I never saw the logic behind equipping a trucker larger than a Ford Ranger with a gasoline engine...

Thats pretty sweet. Its about time we saw GM doing diesel right in trucks below their 2500 series. Now I'd like to see the return of the compact pickup with diesel. They had a diesel S-10 in the 1980s that was a 2.2L i4. Of course it failed like many diesels of the era, but that doesn't mean the concept wasn't good. Small gas trucks nowadays still get pretty crappy mileage and can be a little underpowered with 4cyl engines.

I'd love to see a Ranger with 1 ton of flagstone in the bed. I did it in my half ton Dodge.

I'm not seeing what you're getting at... That a half ton pickup can have a greater payload than a smaller one?

I'm slightly confused as to your point, but on the farm we've filled and driven a Mazda diesel ute (late 90s or early 2000s) with comfortably over a tonne that when moving rocks to fill washed out creek-bed laneway, and when moving pesticide barrels (with a trailer that was similarly overloaded behind the ute) ;)
