I don't see much point to ripping a 1080p Blu-ray movie to something under 2GB in 2013, given the availability and low cost of things like 50Mbps internet connections and 4TB hard drives.

Whining? Hardly. I've just never understood the mindset behind spending a lot of energy doing something poorly when it could just as easily be done better.

Does not give rights to thieves to enjoy product for free.

You didn't read the first part of my post. If it isn't stealing, then there aren't thieves. This shit's important. We have a rich language that can communicate effectively if used correctly. A powerful language can also misdirect, and lie when used incorrectly. Close isn't close enough when dealing with law.

I pirate music because it's easier than ripping to 320k and doing the tags and shit. I plan on downloading the new Protest The Hero album as soon as it's available, because it will probably be available sooner than the digital download card I'll be getting for contributing to their indiegogo campaign.

I am a paying subscriber of Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, and Spotify Unlimited. I have the Ultimate cable package with just about every channel. I torrent a lot of shows that are on Hulu even as free versions, because I don't want the commercials. Also, having a good private tracker and utorrent, it sorta works like an aggregator of sorts. I also do it so if I'm going to be out of town on business, with unknown internet access, I can just grab a season or two of a TV show I'm catching up on or a few movies.

Sometimes I'll move to my living room and watch something through my WD TV live on my 60" plasma, sometimes I'll just watch on my 42" monitor. If I'm out of town I'll put some stuff on my tablet and laptop

I pirate solely out of convenience. I could DVR all new episodes of Modern Family, Community, or other current shows I'm watching, but that'd use up all my DVR space that's normally reserved for football, because my DVR is small, I can't add an external that I know of, and I can't be bothered to request a different one from my cable company.

Most of what I pirate is popular, mainstream stuff that I could be watching legally on one of my paid services, but they're not as convenient. The rest of what I pirate is stuff that is simply too rare to even find someone who would take my money (some band's EP from 15 years ago that only had 2000 copies and they've been broken up for 8 years already), or is for some reason unavailable easily online (The League)

I know what I'm doing is illegal, and I don't care. I don't feel bad at all.

A respectable pirate.

Yeah I'm not one to deny what I'm doing, or argue over whether "stealing" is an accurate term or not. Even if it isn't "technically" stealing, it's a close enough cousin that any time spent arguing over it is wasted for both parties. I can talk myself into being morally justified though, so I'm fine with it

----------------

I did have an interesting thought though when I was writing that, I noticed the (sorta, probably reaching here) parallels between the logic of the pirates/anti-piracy people and the poor/rich dialogue going on these days

Pirate: Why should I pay $20 for this blu-ray? Avatar grossed over $2 billion!
Studio: So what? We worked hard to make that product, we have the right to charge you to use it. Doesn't matter how rich we are

Poor people: Why should I pay for my kids school lunches? I make $30k a year, you make $3 million!
Rich people: So what? I work hard for my $3 million, and pay more than my fair share already.

I know what I'm doing is illegal, but I still do it because

1) don't have time to watch at home, so I watch on the bus to school. We pay for TV, so I know we get the shows, its just for convenience
