Hey Guys
I am 18 years old and i live in Charlotte,NC. I have applied to atleast 50 places in the past 8 months. I have given multiple interviews at places and still dont get the job. This ranks from grocery stores to best buys etc. I am originally from pakistan, although born and raised here. I am seriously thinking this has something to do with my name or something, because illegal people can get those jobs that i applied to, like grocery store jobs. I am a citizen and everything but cant get a job. I am on the no fly list because of my name and i think that has something to do with it. I am thinking about calling the EOEC (equal opp. employer comission)
because i think i am being disciminated agaisnt by alot of companies, like target, circuit city, and these type places i applied....even wendys !!
I called them today and they said which company would you like to file a charge against and such
what do you guys think i should do about this ?
thanks !
btw im broke as hell...i have a thread on FS to sell some stuff..lol

Why are you on the no fly list? Get that cleared up and you might find your fortunes change.

So many employers are doing background checks, maybe something is showing up.

I'd at least start there.

man i get cleared every time i fly, my dad works for US Airways and i fly non-rev. I still am on the no-fly list, while my dad has been cleared by the FAA for every regulation out there. MY dad is a aircraft mechanic, and he has been for the past 25 years. I think its that, but i mean i had a background check at office depot, and that supposedly came back clear, but i still didnt get the job because apparently "a employee came back from college" which was WTF

How is your language skills? If you have an accent that may hold you back on CS type jobs. Have you tried temp agencies to get by on? Hope it works out.

Good luck and if you think it has anything to do with your name or ethnicity please file a complaint.

It's possible you're simply being outsourced. I hardly think it's racism.

i don't have anything to say but i'll bump :p i understand where you're coming from being a middle eastern first gen. kid in the US, although i haven't had the same luck as you. then again, i'm in cali and they're hella liberal here so idk.

anyway, if any of those places that you applied for had a "for hire" sign and still do or did after they rejected you, i guess those would be good ones to report.

It's very possible that you're dealing with racism in some cases, but don't let that influence you when you're dealing with these people. If you let it show through in your attitude, you'll never get a job.

im a friendly person, im not into racism stuff, and im not racist. These people whoever i ever met with were very impressed with me at the interviews, and after...they are poof !
so i mean..should i still go to the EOE...should i like tell them about ALL the companies. I didnt get a job at circuit city for a tech, i had a interview, a friend of mine walked in, and they hired him out of no where, he actually supposedly got "hired" before he ever didnt do the app online. i mean i feel like a pure retard, im a tech guy trying to get a tech job.
my friend worked at a car stereo store, and the manager just randomly asked him about some head unit, and he told him what it was and got the job...it was just retarded

I dunno, what skills do you have? I would look into calling the EOE, if all what you say is true, I'd be looking into this.

I read something in Freakonomics about how it's easier for a guy whose name sounds "white" to get a job. I feel like that's been holding me back sometimes too. My family is also from Pakistan and I was born here like you. I've been able to get some jobs based on my own merit, but the best paying jobs that I've had so far, Circuit City and Home Depot, I was able to get only because I knew people who worked there and got me an interview. Though it's not like places like that have high standards judging by the people who work there. I think applicants often just get lost in the shuffle and managers are lazy and uninterested in who they hire.

I think your best bet is to apply somewhere where one of your friends works and get them to bug management about hiring you.

Also, I don't think it's a good idea to call a place and threaten to call the EOE. Would you want to work some place where you started out like that?

Nice to hear that. The last job that i had a great chance of getting was the computer lab at my college. One of my "uncles" is the VP of IT at my school. I told him all about that i applied for the job and etc etc. man he didnt do anything, my other close friend sent a recommendation for me,but that didnt work either. But the reason i didnt get the job because of my freshman status, i have to be there for atleast a semester until i can get the job
