they are all garbage
i paid $5 times 7 = $35 for my normal garbage hauler to take my old ones away, that seemed pretty reasonable compared to some recycle places i checked on
i only kept one crt and we still have one crt TV in the house, but it is only used for xbox (original) and gamecube

I can pick up my 40" LCD without the stand attached with one arm, I almost broke my back lifting a 20" CRT TV recently... Can't see why anyone wouldn't want the latter.

Good lord. I didn't know they made 40" CRTs. That thing must weigh as much as a small car.

I still see CRTs floating around some television stations. They're cheap, durable, relyable, and have better picture quality than most LCD sets. When I was doing sports mobiles, we had a 10" set for the callers. Didn't look that heavy but it was a steel framed broadcast Trinitron. Weighed a ton. Almost as much as the tripod cases, and I'm not exaggerating.

Plasma's pushing it. I had some trouble with a 42" plasma. I ended up returning it (great picture, annoying buzz sound), then got the 40" LCD, which is why the difference was so noticeable.

A Standard Definition TV CRT? Yeah those essentially are worthless.

I have a 27" Toshiba CRT that I am *giving* away with my old solid oak entertainment center. The TV has great standard-def picture. The entertainment center is nearly in showroom condition 6ft tall and 7ft wide, and I haven't gotten a single e-mail about it since posting it on Craigslist. My guess why: the cut-out in the center for the TV is 4:3.

The thrift stores around here won't even accept them. And there is an electronics store that will recycle anything... expect for CRT's.

However Best Buy took them and trade for gift cards, not sure if they are still running that program.

I don't really like to throw things away needlessly, so this is why I ran my 20" Dell Trinitron monitor up until about 4 years ago when it finally broke. It had a great picture, so why throw it away needlessly? From what I've heard, high end CRT's are still used for photo/video editing due to more accurate color reproduction. And with CRT's you had a lot more resolutions available. A 24" flat screen is just a blown up 20", it's still only 1680x1050 or whatever the native resolution of the flat screen is.

I rather miss my Sony FW900 monitor. I could game in any resolution I wanted, lowering it if need be. When it gave out the 23" flat panel that replaced it pretty much limited me to 1080p and nothing else. I also can no longer stack a pizza on top of it while I game. =( So convenient.

Only one vacuum tube = junk. Many vacuum tubes = possible value. "Solid state" CRTs are not difficult to recycle once broken down to their core components, but that is the labor intensive part. We have occasional e-scrap programs here, and even then you are limited on how many CRTs you can turn in. Hopefully people aren't actually chucking these on the side of the road or in rivers, as there are actually quite a bit of toxic chemicals in them: Link for ~60 lbs of computer e-waste Case+CRT

Even moderate (27+)sized CRT televisions easily weigh over 60 lbs on their own.

24" = 1080p at least. so you are off with that one, 30" are 4mp even.

i doubt the video editing, high end lcd is now past crt in color gamut/rendering.

Nobody wants a CRT. I tried giving away my 32" Sony Trinitron five years ago and even then nobody wanted it. I always see CRTs on the sidewalk with signs taped to them, "Works. Take me" and nobody ever does.

I have a Mitsubishi 35" CRT (CS-35401) in my bedroom. I have no idea how much it weighs, but it definitely takes me and at least one other person to lift it. I once pulled a groin sliding it across the room on the rug.

It gives a great picture still but I am waiting for the damn thing to die (a 37" LCD will fit perfectly in my entertainment center).

It will cost me two dinners and some beer for my friends so I can move it when it finally dies.

Holding on to CRTs for another 25 years should get you a little bit of money. They'll be nostalgic then, and people will want them for their antique electronics. I have a few smaller ones, and don't want to get rid of them. I have a hard time throwing out working equipment.

I actually did sell a Mitsubishi 19" CRT computer monitor recently for $10 on CL. It took about 2 months to sell though. At least it isn't in the dump.

I tried to give away a 32" Sony Trinitron, no takers. Luckily the guys who delivered the 50" plasma that replaced it agreed to cart it away for me. Moving a TV that size is a major bitch.
Possibly one of the best TVs ever made for video gaming.

I'm actually thinking about eventually grabbing a smallish CRT just for some retro gaming. Playing old NES and SNES games just don't look right on an LCD, even with all the filters you can apply.

That said, it's not a huge priority anyway.

I keep waiting for the tv station to finally replace and throw out one of the old broadcast monitors. Retro gamers still swear by them.

Ha! I sold my Toshiba 32AF44 on CL for $50 last month. It has a flat-front CRT, and it weighed like 165lbs.

I had it posted off and on since November. Three people came over to look at it, and all three loved it (it's a nice TV). The third person was the only one who could fit it in their car.

I sold a 19-inch ASTAR brand LCD TV a couple of weeks ago for $25. Despite only the coax input working (composite, component, and VGA inputs died), it sold in just two weeks. While looking at other's prices for a 19-inch LCD, I saw some idiots asking as much as $300!

CL requires patience and persistance, the ability to deal with stupid questions, and the fortitude to deal with 85% of the people/emails being complete flakes.
