I can't even give this old CRT away on Craigslist

I use the "free stuff" section of Craigslist when I want to get rid of stuff that even Goodwill won't take. Leftover lanscaping mulch, scrap lumber, old toys...I gave away a pre-lit Christmas tree with 90% of lights not working, for God's sake.

I would laugh because there are guys that you know troll that site constantly. I usually get flooded will calls and texts within 20 minutes of posting free stuff.

So yesterday I dismounted a 25 inch CRT that was mounted outside under an overhang. I got exactly one email about it, and turns out guy doesn't want to drive 10 miles to get it.

I heard they sell CRTs at Goodwill for like $5.

I just dropped 5 CRT monitors and a CRT TV off at Salvation Army this weekend... wasn't even worth trying to sell. I'll write off a few bucks on my taxes for them. I just wanted them the hell out of here... they take up way too much room.

in the trash those things go. i see crt monitors and tvs at yard sales for $5-10 all the time and nobody ever buys them.

i did see a kinda cool ~32" widescreen crt sony hdtv for $50 at goodwill once. even had hdmi inputs. must have been ~200lbs.

i busted a 21" sony tv once just to see what was inside. most of the weight wasn't just glass, it was also the thick steel frame embedded in the front.

I put them on the curb. They are gone the next day so I don't care if the trash men picked them up or someone else. I only care that they are gone. The only one I ever successfully gave away was a 24" widescreen Sun monitor. It was actually quite nice but it weighed in at about 90 pounds.

A Standard Definition TV CRT? Yeah those essentially are worthless.

My mom has a really nice 36" Sony Trinitron CRT. The thing is an absolute monster, but it has a great picture (for a SD TV). Thankfully my mom doesn't care about HD, and as such the beast CRT isn't going anywhere soon. I hopefully will be very very far away by the time that thing needs to be moved.

Looked it up on Amazon. It appears to magically lose 25 pounds when you ship it. That is a pretty nifty feature.
Item Weight: 270 pounds
Shipping Weight: 245 pounds

I've heard one person that did TV deliver say that CRTs are getting to the point where they have negative value so they are even worse than being worthless. People don't want them because it's not HD and/or they can't get TV over the air without a converter. They're a pain to move (at least for any that has a reasonable screen size) and in most areas you aren't allowed to throw them in the regular trash. In many cases people have to pay to have somebody take it away and dispose of it properly, hence the negative value.

I tried to give away a 32" Sony Trinitron, no takers. Luckily the guys who delivered the 50" plasma that replaced it agreed to cart it away for me. Moving a TV that size is a major bitch.

Yep. SD TV crts are mostly useless.

I did have a Sony 21" CRT from the 80s that my parents brought with them from japan. It even had what look liked a floppy connector on the back of it. I used to remember what it was called, but it was some sort of weird video input. It was pretty much perfect for SD consoles. You go the nostalgia of scan lines, but with sharp picture and great colors. I wish I hadn't thrown that thing away.

I have a 29" RCA TV (CRT) in my garage, with every connection known to man (when it was made). Quite unusual for a TV of that age, that usually came with cable/composite.

Goodwill won't take it. Salvation Army won't take it. My local church won't even take it.

I hate to just toss it out because it still works great, and could probably sell it for $10 out of my trunk downtown (but not interested in doing that), but I'm about ready to toss it in the trash.

I posted my 40" XBR as a free item on Craig's List and only got one taker.

I think CRT's are great for retro gaming. Ever try to play some classic SNES Mario or Genesis era Sonic on a 1080p display? awful awful awful. Even 480p Wii games look horrid upscaled to 1080p.

I remember trying to sell my dads old sony 52" crt from 20 years ago and when I told people they would have to pick it up and move it they changed their mind. What do people think Im going to pick up this 300lb monster tv and move it to their place for free? I even said in the listing buyer picks up and they expected a white glove delivery.

This is true, and the input delay caused by the analog to digital conversion makes it lag for ancient but classic consoles like the NES/SNES/Genesis/TG16/etc.

RGB classic gaming is even better, but that takes dedication to get the mods/cables/RGB set.

That connector you are talking about may have been Scart connector

for the big ones, if you don't want to risk your friends/families backs, you probably have to add professional moving fee, wonder how much that would be.

Buy a new TV that includes free removal of the old one. That's how I got rid of my last one!
