I can't do this the rest of my life

I'm sitting at Union Pacific headquarters in Omaha. A huge glass box at 1400 Douglas Street. In front of a computer doing menial intern work. Even if they paid me $60,000 out of college, I don't think I could do this.

I think once I graduate, I'm going to get a part time job somewhere, or work construction, and see where my band goes. I seek adventure and travel!

For the rest of you 9-5 type of people, do you guys love what you do? What makes you all keep your incredibly high paying jobs even though you might hate it?

I sit in front of a computer all day and absolutely love it.

Mental labor >>> Physical labor in my book.

Huh? Oh right, everyone has a high-paying job and dates a supermodel. While still in college no less. :disgusted;

<-- currently working a $7.95/hr job for the summer, and pleased to be quitting at the end of the month. At least it motivates me to work harder when I get back to school next month...

My strategy is this: either LEARN to love what you do, or go do something else. I might not have my dream job but I have learned to love the job I have now.

Five more years and I start to back away from my business and move towards retirement. If I had stuck with my first manual labour job (landscaping) I'm sure I would have to work at least another 15 years.

$60k right out of college is pretty freaking nice. Oh I forget this is ATOT. $60k/wk is the average starting salary here.

no, i wasn't implying that at all. i think its high paying for a single person living where i live. i was taking a crack at how everyone on ATOT makes more than $150,000 a year.

out of college, it's pretty good.

yeah, it's alright out of college

but if you live in a high cost of living area and paying a huge portion in taxes, it's not much at all

I just want to go out and experience new shit. Meet new people. Travel. This glass box sucks.

I might just get the job here after I graduate and save my money for maybe two years then go do what I want.

The biggest thing is that what I decide to do in the next two years pretty much determines the rest of my life. I don't want it to be like that. It makes me feel uncomfortable... :(

Um...I work a 9-5 job and have traveled to 10+ countries this year and taken already 4 weeks of vacation with 3 still left to take. On top of that I get paid well. Sometimes you can have both...you just have to look for the opportunities and work hard at achieving them.

You'll get over that. Then the drinking will really kick in.

I enjoy my work, but I don't work for someone else so that at least keeps me motivated to the point where I'm not just filling someone else's pockets.

I know I sound like an old man when I say this, but you'll grow out of it. You're young, and the "I like adventure and travel" will soon take on a new meaning. You shouldn't assume that having a job means you can't travel or have adventure. I travel more now than I ever could, because financially I can afford to do so.

A whopping two years? :) Like I just said, you'll grow out of that. Responsibility finds a way of forcing it upon you whether you like it or not. If you'd rather live the life of an ascetic then by all means, but I think you'll quickly find that it takes a lot more than two years to do what you want.

Adventure, excitement... a Jedi craves not these things.

Where he lives, $60k is enough to comfortably raise a family of four.

I've actually been to a few meetings at the Woodman Tower, I worked on a year-long project for UP... they moved the app in-house a year or two ago.
