Intern work sucks...that is just how it is. It gets much better when you work independently and not having to rely on someone else for work.

Um...I work a 9-5 job and have traveled to 10+ countries this year and taken already 4 weeks of vacation with 3 still left to take. On top of that I get paid well. Sometimes you can have both...you just have to look for the opportunities and work hard at achieving them.

just a general description if you want to stay private

get out of the electronics industry if you want to travel. Most people here want that big job at Intel....but that is what the 9-5 job is.

i though that also....but you will soon see that the only person who has decided what happens in the future is yourself. CHnaging industries can be difficult, but if you show that you really have what it takes, doors will open.

union pacific is one of the biggest railroad companies in the united states. they have rails from the mississippi all the way to the west coast. they don't really deal with the east part of the states.

I know through proper investment that I can retire at 45 and do whatever the hell I want while yo uwill be asking me if I want fries with that.

It's alright depending on what I'm doing. Right now, the stuff I'm doing is kind of bland, but whatever... I get paid good money for it, so I don't really complain. Hopefully, I'll be back to doing the "old stuff" soon again and that wasn't too bad. But overall, I don't think I'm ever fully comfortable in an office setting. I can actually work at home much better than I can at the office.

I worked at a local gov agency coding from 8-4:45. that was the worst tthree years of my working life. Now I work 9ish-5ish with a long lunch and often meet a variety of people with some interesting tales. On boring days I just threaten insurance adjusters but it is still better than silently staring at a monitor all day.

$60,000 is considered mid-middle class in South Florida, if you're a single. For a family with kids, it's more than enough to get by, especially if your SO is also working. $60k may be chump change and considered low class in places like NY, DC, CA, etc. My old roommate is making $80k a year in DC and is barely getting by. And he's pretty thrifty.


My parents both make no more than $35k combined. They just paid off the house and car (3rd car) and raised 4 kids to college.

In a city that is ranked #5 on the top Best Places to Live, with a median FAMILY average salary of $58,000 a year, and an average house cost of approx $115,000 ($250,000 house here is HUGE) - then yes, 60k annually is an incredibly high paying job here.

We never really got wrapped up in that whole housing bubble bullshit. Omaha has maintained a pretty steady growth and high standard of living and avoided many of the more harsh eceonomic burns that other parts of the country are facing - and it's turned into a very technology oriented place for work environments, with software engineers and programmers consisting of 33% of our workforce.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but how do you manage to afford that? I, like many people, will be paying off decent-sized college loans and trying to live on my own when I graduate in 2011. How do you find the money to travel? Do you not have college loans and/or do you make a lot of money? I'm not being sarcastic or anything, it's a serious question.
