EDIT: had to come back to put more emphasis on this. I think everyone would agree that PSU overall has higher acclaim, but the engineering numbers stand for themself. PURDUE ENGINEERING FTW (i am not affiliated w/ either school)

Hm.. interesting. What I really need is someone who's been to either school and get a first hand opinion. And yea, I'm aware Purdue is ranked higher. I don't like the fact that its ranked higher than PSU, yet PSU is harder to get into than Purdue.

EDIT: Ranked higher in engineering*

let me also add that it is what purdue is known for to most ppl that know much about colleges. Yes, PSU overall is a better school, and harder to get into, but i think that should not make a difference at all. When you are done w/ your 4 years those who are hiring will know the value of your purdue degree in engineering. This would be a no brainer for me. However, i do see how PSU's overall higher rating is holding you up. But in terms of engineering, Purdue is the first major school that comes inot my head for great public schools in engineering

you might be able to get into Purdue Engineering, but after 106... i dont think many people stay. that is their "selector"

PSU = middle of no where
Purdue = middle of ABSOFVCKINGLUTELY no where.

Purdue has like #3 largest greek system in the U.S.

PSU is larger than Purdue.

i believe PSU has better sports all around.

PSU might have a nicer campus (never visited, i shoulda)

its up to you.

guess the cost is not a matter here. you will be paying out-of-state tuition which is normally a double of in-state tuition.

go with purdue.

You should have applied to the many UCs ( University of California). Best public school system in the best state.

This is the description for Engineering 106 at Purdue, it doesn't sound bad at all.

ENGR 106: Introduction to Computer Tools for Engineers - 2 credit hours
Introduction to the use of computer software for solving engineering problems. UNIX, computer communications, spreadsheets for problem solving and plotting. Iterations and loops using spreadsheets. Use of Matlab for problem solution and plotting. Iterations and loops using Matlab. Applications in engineering.

might not sound bad, but when all you hear is freshman complaining about that class, and how it is a weedout class, then you learn everything.

Purdue does have other schools as well other than engineering.

there is a reason my former RA is interning at A.B. overseeing the build up of a brewing factory, and gets an A.B. credit card which he can purchaes any amount of alcohol on he wants, along with a free car, and plane trips to and from home...

I agree that Purdue is the more prestigious and better for engineering. PSU is known as a good school, but not especially in engineering.

Having graduated from Purdue I am biased. I did attend a couple Penn State/Purdue games in State College and was impressed. The engineering weed out class when I was there was Physics 152. It was much harder to take in the spring semester.

Go there and see it! There is NO substitute for seeing it for yourself.

I don't know anything about Purdue, but as far as PSU is concerned, I just can't see shelling out out-of-state tuition for a state school unless you are entering a field of study for which it is known (like meteorology at PSU).

It's a good school but it doesn't seem worth it for an out-of-stater.

For me it was:

1. Location - good campus, hot chicks, stuff to do around town.
2. Price
3. Research, outstanding professors, english speaking TAs
4. Program - Coop, research, etc.

I was looking seriously at Purdue until I visited. I really didn't like their campus (lots of busy streets running through it). I wound up applying as a backup to my first choice (Rice). I got in, but I also got into Rice so I never really had to seriously consider going to Purdue. I probably would have gone to UIUC if I hadn't gotten into Rice.
