Hi

I'm having trouble deciding whether I should go to Penn State University Park or Purdue University in West Lafayette. According to various websites, PSU is very selective whereas Purdue is only moderately selective. Yet, Purdue is ranked #10 in Engineering; PSU is ranked in the 20s. Purdue is also cheaper, but Pennsylvania is closer to where I live (New Jersey). Overall, PSU is ranked in the 40s and Purdue is in the 60s. I can't make up my mind. Plz, help make my decision clearer!

Have you visited the schools? That could help you out in making your decision.

Seeing as how you probably won't get accepted to both, your decision will be partly made for you.

When it comes down to it, go to where you feel comfortable. Beyond that most things equal out.

Ditto the visits. You gotta visit to tell which one is right. Trust me, once you see both, you will know pretty easily which is the correct choice. :: UVM!!! cough cough:::

no one cares how high your engineering undergrad is ranked, they only look at the school you went to. Worry about engineering rankings in grad school.

I guess I'm gonna have to visit both schools. Shoulda applied to UIUC. Woulda gone there if I got accepted hands down. Got rejected from Carnegie Mellon and figured I had no chance T_T; Damn private school--threw me off.

I highly suggest not asking for advice at ATOT when it comes to major decisions. Just pick the one you like.

you need to get in first. and psu is very expensive for out of state. keep that in mind. you might get into a satellite campus at psu if you dont get into the main campus. hard to get into main.

I disagree. The beauty of forums like ATOT is that you have the ability to discuss information/opinions with lots and lots of people. That doesn't mean a person would make up their mind regarding a major decision completely from ATOT. But posting questions might result in the OP getting new ideas.

In ATOT, yes there's lots of neffing and that's just wonderful, but there's also some pretty good advice/information in Off-Topic.

Neither are hard to get into! Anyways, I also advise you to visit the two schools. You don't want to end up somewhere you don't like for the next 4 years. I don't know about Purdue but Penn State is in the middle of no where.

without a doubt in my mind, PURDUE for engineering..... its what they are known best for. PSU for almost any other major. BUT def purdue for engineering

EDIT: had to come back to put more emphasis on this. I think everyone would agree that PSU overall has higher acclaim, but the engineering numbers stand for themself. PURDUE ENGINEERING FTW (i am not affiliated w/ either school)
