I can't believe why people aren't amazed at this thought. NOBODY is impressed....

I've always thought that one of the most incredible thoughts a person can conceive is that the fact that every one of you exists is an amazingly unlikely coincidence. Just think of the vast amount of events that occurred at the exact right moment and in the exact right place, which in turn led to your birth. I mean, there are so many things that could've easily occurred which would've led to many other possible worlds or circumstances...

For example, back in the beginnings of the Solar System, the early Earth was formed by collisions of smaller rocks until gradually the Earth took the current size and path around the Sun. Imagine what would've occurred if one of the small rocks that was supposed to collide with the early Earth actually took a different path and never came in contact with the early Earth. In all probability, we wouldn't exist. There wouldn't be life, nothing.

I've come up with many of such "what if" scenarios and for some reason people don't seem impressed.

This thought is so amazing that it makes me glad that I'm Catholic and I actually believe that God set up the whole thing, knowing that we would be the product of such unlikely events.

Of course, if you don't believe in God, then you gotta consider yourselves lucky. Nothing wrong with that. I am not against atheists or anything like that. It's just a thought.

I wish there was a way to sage at ATOT....

I want to post but I don't want it to bump this crappy thread any higher.

anthropic principle.

the only way we are here to think about it is because it happened that way. it doesn't matter if it's the most unlikely thing to happen in the history of the universe, it only has to happen once, because here we are thinking about it. it's not that amazing.

I was wondering what the world would look like if you hadn't posted this thread (looks out window)....ya about the same.

that's arrogant to think all of this isn't amazing just because 'it had to happen that way'.

Well, no shit shirlock. If things didn't happen that way, it wouldn't be. That's like saying the sky is blue because if it wasn't blue, it wouldn't be blue.

People aren't impressed by your "what if" scenario's because people don't care about hypothetical situations. Some of them might be interesting to think about for a second (what if Hitler was never born, what if our next president is a woman, etc, etc) but for the most part, no one is going to care, because whatever happened, happened.

In short, it's not you (some people might beg to differ), it's the idea itself.

But you gotta admit (and be amazed) that the outcome could've been different... easily, assuming you don't believe in God.

You're looking at it backwards. Something was going to exists. We just happen to be that which exists by chance. Otherwise we would be a different being thinking what a strange coincidence it is that we exist.

Does every thread you make have to include "Serious Thread" at the end?

Of course. Otherwise people don't take it seriously and think I'm just joking around for some reason...

Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space, 'cause there's ah heck all down here on Earth.

PS - Nobody is impressed at your thought because it's SHOCKINGLY unoriginal.

I know I'm not the first person to think about that, but I know I am one of the few that truly appreciates the deepness of the thought. I know some of you think like me, but you are afraid to say it...
