And to those who say walk? Are you kidding me? It's not like you have two weeks before a hurricane hits to start walking. You have a day, at best. Having lived in FL for the past 13 years, the forecast tracks are fairly inaccurate. For instance, when Katrina came over florida, i was supposed to wake up with it overhead the next morning, instead it was beautiful out as the storm jogged south. My point being, even right before a storm hits, you really dont always know where to go. And saying they have legs and could have walked is just ignorant.
/agree
If they'd have walked on the I-10 bridge to Baton Rouge, and the storm veered west and obliterated Baton Rouge, then what? We'd have people all over the country flaming them still. "OMG they r teh dumbzors!1!! they WALKED into a hurricane with no shelter!1!!" You all realize that Katrina was hundreds of miles across, right?
Should they have heeded the orders if they could have? Yes. Do I understand why they did not? Absolutely. I can't count the number of hurricanes I've ridden out in my lifetime, and can't begin to remember how many hit Louisiana every year. How many times have evacuations been ordered, and folks left only to find they'd wasted their time?
To those in Florida, how many of you have been ordered to evacuate and did? How many of your neighbors stayed? How many times have you been ordered to evacuate only to have the hurricane miss?
I think it's a tribute to Mayor Nagin that he got as many folks out as he did. I think that I read that something upwards of 80% of the folks in NO evacuated. I think that's an astounding number for a city of half a million with less than two days notice. I can't think of another example of anywhere managing to evacuate that many people under those conditions.
Were these MANDATORY evacuations you ignored?
Of course there will be some who ignore evacuations, my point was that many there HAD NO CHOICE. To suggest that they just simple start walking is crazy, where would they walk to? If you dont have a car and if you don't know anyone nearby to pick you up or travel to, what can you do?
Also, knowing people who were in NO just before the storm (saturday to be specific), many of the basic transportation systems shut down in expectation of the possible storm. Taxi cabs left the city, busses were in many places non-existant since many drivers left, etc...
You dodged my question. There are people that had the means to leave the city and didn't. They ignored a mandatory evecuation. FEMA director isn't talking about those that could not leave. How hard is that to understand?
You seem to not understand my position either, judging by your comments earlier in the thread
If you can't afford to leave by car or other mechanical means during a MANDATORY evacuation, WALK."
