I didn't care for music at all until I first heard Megadeth when I was about 10 years old. Since then, my tastes have been pretty specific. I like what I like, and am completely indifferent towards everything else.

Sounds like in your case, you haven't found what you like, as others have mentioned. It's a real shame.

Ehh I sorta lost touch with them when Youthanasia came out, but, when I feel like some good thrash, So Far So Good So What, Peace Sells, and Rust in peace do still get a lot of play time ... of course these days it's on CD instead of on cassette

Same here. 99% of the music I hear I just feel "meh." As in apathetic. I've always been like this: when younger I would try to be interested in "popular" music to fit in, but I just couldn't understand what the big deal was and never had any interest. I surprise people with this and they try to convince me to like the music they seem to love by having me listen to it, but its always completely uninteresting to me. I humor them or just bluntly tell them how lame their music is.

I do appreciate the occasional good movie track or most of the classical music I have heard. Maybe the problem is that 99% of music actually sucks and all that I've heard that has been uninteresting to me sucks. Maybe I haven't found the right music, but I haven't been interested in looking for it.

That's because 99% of music is shit. I used to be completely uninterested in music and only liked the occasional classical and soundtrack music, but over time I've found out there actually is good music out there in every genre (can't say that about rap, but perhaps I just haven't explored it enough). The problem with people trying to get you to listen to their music is that more often than not, it's something very popular which more often than not sounds extremely generic.

I am not "in" to music. I listen. I enjoy. I do NOT live for it. I do not have favorite bands, or styles. I dont hate anything in particular. I dont make playlists on my car audio or home computer. I dont cry when I hear a special song. I dont share a special song with a girlfriend. And I damn sure dont give a fucknut about the person singing. I dont care if they have a dick or not. If they fucked a football team. If they fucked the cheerleaders. I just dont care.

In my teens, I never listened to music. I only started liking bands in my 20s. I like jazz but I can't name any favourite groups or performers. It's usually a sit and listen to it on the radio thing. The only concert I've ever been to was Sharon, Lois, and Bram when I was 4.

Classic rock is my next favourite genre, which I do have some bands I like. Mostly bigger ones like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Oh yeah everyone saying I need to "discover what I like" or that I "have no soul" didn't properly read what I wrote - I specifically said I didn't hate music, I'm just sort of apathetic to it. I don't love it the way many people seem to. Like I said before, it's like a hobby that some people care very much about and others don't.

I even touched on certain types I like more than others, so I do have preferences, they're just not very strong preferences.

I've been to perhaps a couple hundred concerts of different types over the years, from small local bands to some of the biggest names in rock & roll and country/western, to classical music from at least a dozen different symphonies/ensembles. I LIKE music...but don't listen to it all the time. I don't own any mp3 player of any kind, don't download music, don't buy CD's on a regular basis, rarely listen to music when I'm at home, other than at dinnertime, and in the car, I'm as likely to listen to news/traffic as I am to any music channel.

I definitely prefer music that doesn't include vocals...the whole "My voice is my instrument," really doesn't appeal to me...MOST of the time.

I don't even listen to the radio. I haven't actively listened to the radio in years. Most of my music doesn't play on any local radios anyway.

Those who haven't been to a concert should try one sometime. Not all bands are good in concert though. Some just sit there and play their music, which will sound better from your home stereo anyway. Others are actual performers and work the crowd, those can be a lot of fun. Some are big arena concerts, some are coffee house shows. Hell, the last show I went to was in a bar with a band called Big Hair Revolution. Not what you would call a concert but still enjoyable.

The thing with rap is that it isn't just a different style but also very unique as a genre. Some musicians in other genres attempt to use their genre in a similar way, but rap is best suited for speaking a specific message or story. To enjoy it is to see how a specific artist uses their talent to express this message. Some like traditional easy beats, some like fast lyrics, some try a hybrid style using musical instruments like guitars and pianos. It can be very diverse if you really explore the genre.

Might as well throw in my 2 cents since I am here... I used to be into music heavily, to the point of playing in rock bands, dj'ing and some electronic music production, and collecting lots of music and going to lots of concerts. I would say that this all occurred between the age of 15 and 25. Now, at 32, I find any time I could have spend listening to music is spent listening to podcasts. I basically never listen to music anymore, and almost think of it as a waste of time. I know it is not, I just would rather stuff my head full of information rather than listen to music which I don't think you get anything tangible out of.

Honestly, I still haven't picked it up, I have heard a few tracks when in friends cars, and I'll admit it's goood stuff, but, I sorta hit a wall of having "too many cds, not enough room for them all", a couple of years ago, so I've pretty much put my CD buying on hold until I'm done with work on my basement, then, I should have a good 10-15 foot long section of wall that I can use floor to ceiling for CD and DVD storage

I agree.... My drum and bass folder is so overwhelming right now. My dj tag partner are planning a comeback so we have been stocking up on music. Mostly he has been spinning dubstep lately. There are just not enough hours in the day for all of the different contents available on the internetz.

I like music for beats. Lyrics are completely irrelevant to me, unless the singers voice actually harmonizes with the music (then the voice is like an instrument itself...). For example, Dragonforce has some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard, but I love the sound of the actual music. Super fast playing rocks my socks :awe:

I'm the same way. I spend hours on Itunes just trying to find something I like. All the music on it sounds the same - bland, no harmony, no rhythm, and no melody. I go from listening to Nine Inch Nails, golden oldies, and even to Hans Zimmer movie scores. I have a weird, but broad taste in music.
