I can think of a good reason NOT to run RC5

I just don't see what the problem is. Forum rules aren't black and white, and RC5 has obviously been given an exception. Team Anandtech has a large following (660+ daily contributing members, 2600+ total contributing members), and it brings a lot of attention to anandtech.com. I don't think a few people who can't ignore the recruiting threads justify a need for change in policy.

no budman, it's just people who visit here often that don't join RC-5 that get annoying, cause you all enter the threads and flame on about how useless it is, when really it's pretty fun to do.

why don't you just try it? it's NOT going to kill you. in fact, you'll barely feel a thing.

if not, fine, but LEAVE US ALONE so we can reqruit in peace. if we drive you mad with these threads then too bad! the only solution to that is JOINING! and having FUN because you join!

No i dont. So i expect the same from you.

I dont think it's too much to ask.

If someone really want to join RC5 then they can just go there and ask a few questions and i am sure people will be happy to answer them.

If you did ask a hardware question in the DC forum....It would get many "fast" responses and no flames....Many of the TA family ask their questions there because they get a much better response..


Update: Paulson, it's not worth the flames...Please respond in a respectful manner or not at all...

The Distributed Computing projects are part of AnandTech. They are here to stay, as are the recruiting efforts for these projects. I would request that you stay out of these threads and keep your negative comments to yourself. I would suggest that you consider this request very seriously.

Credit to Red Dawn ...who I agree with that this should have been in OT or Forum Issues..

I hope that the TA Distributed Computing group is not considered, as a whole, flamers and agressive at recruiting...Some of us try very hard to just pass along information for others to weigh and choose as they see fit. We apologize for the few DC members that recruit forcefully or in a "trolling" manner...

I see the floor has already been swept with this one, but I'd like to add something..

For those of you wondering why there are so many Distributed Computing recruiting threads lately, the better Team Anandtech does in the dnet stats and the more power we have, the better our forums and Anandtech in general looks to the public. While this might not seem like a very big deal, it is essential to keeping a site like this in business. Anand has been grateful enough to have a DC logo on the front page to gain new members, and the same attitude flows here in the forums. To me it just makes sense to help give back to a forum that has helped me more times than I can remember. Wouldn't you want new members of these forums to continue having the same help and partnership? It's easy to see that threads such as this can become annoying, but that's like saying you &quot;don't like Cyrix processors&quot; and everytime you see a thread about it you should go in the thread just to complain. It's obvious that if you have nothing good to say, then keep it to yourself. Let the Moderators do the rest.

I crack RC5 because I enjoy competition. But, hey, not everyone likes competition, so I can certainly understand why some would not want to participate.

But, for those who do enjoy competing, there are a ton of different projects (not just RC5) and more stats than you can shake a stick at.:) Plus, it's awfully easy. Set it, and forget it.

Dont worry Red i dont take it the wrong way.

I have been here since the forums started in 99,i even helped with the beta testing of it.:)

Before i was a member in the original forums too and i enjoy the forums very much.

I dont like to post much (average only 2 posts per day) but i try to help when i can.

I have nothing against RC5,as a matter of fact i ran it for a while but lost interest.

If anybody want to run it then they are very welcome to run it, It's just not for ME.

That's all i will say about RC5 and i consider the matter closed.

If you want competition, go play hockey or some other sport.

rc5 isnt a competition. its a cow icon in the corner of you screen that slowly but efficiently eats away at your cpu until its dead.

day 1: 100 blocks
day 2: 101 blocks
day 3: 99 blocks
day 4: 101 blocks
day 5: 100 blocks
day 6: 100 blocks
day 7: 105 blocks
day 8: 111 blocks

WOW!! I cracked 111 blocks today!!! 6 more than my personal best! its the same number over and over everyday, until you upgrade you cpu, or add a new computer.

How can anyone consider that to be fun?

Hold on there Hearvii the title of the thread said you had a good reason for not doing rc5. My reasons for doing it aren't the topic of this thread so i will keep them to myself for now. I just want to know what that GOOD reason for not doing rc5 is. What you have posted here so far doesn't convince me not to do rc5. Come on hit me with that good reason not to do rc5. Convince me that I am making a grave error in judgement by running it. So far your arguments just sound like a lot of bitching to me.

This has allready been mostly driven into the ground, so I'll just say this: We're proud of what we do, and Anand is proud of what we do. You don't have to join TA, all you need to do is accept that we're part of the Anandtech family. While you're free to fight with us, do it on our ground, so that we're not made out to be the bad guys here(We're yahoos, not bad guys;)). Then, should you find something reasonable that would make TA unattractive to others, feel free to talk about it, just don't forget that for the con you find, there's probably 10 pros to go against it.:)

PS Red Dawn, your idea has merrit, I'll see if the others agree with it

I think it's an excellent idea. One thread that contains all the relevant details and bump it regularly.

Stefan has been running around claiming that RC5 killed his 300A o/c'd to 450. Of course, those of us who run it on dozens of overclocked CPU's know that what really happened is that his CPU already had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

Any program that uses the CPU in any way, slowly kills the CPU. RC5 however, forces the CPU to run at 100% load 24/7, thus it &quot;eats away&quot; at the CPU many times more quickly than any other program would (other programs like RC5 kill it too. Seti if its running in the background, etc)

To many people, the CPUs life will outlast RC5 because the user upgrades his/her CPU fairly often. To others who do not replace parts as often, the CPU may die before the user intended on upgrading.

To be totally honest, a while ago the posts asking people to join RC5 were not too bad, and were few and far between, but now there are many many more threads about joining RC5.

BTW Red... Look at my nick. Do you see a PH in it? its STEFAN!! Someone has eventually got to notice that!

I run RC5 for two reasons...
1. Stats!!!
2. Competition

plus it's just cool knowing so much computing power is being devoted to one cause and that you are a small part of it. It doesn't hinder performance...if it did, I wouldn't be running it.

Russ, it may have had 1 foot in the grave, but wouldnt have slipped on any banana peel.

RC5 was the banana peel my CPU died on. My CPU would have lasted me a few more months while I was waiting to get a new processor. Instead, I had to get something quickly to replace my part so I could even use my computer.

Stefan, do you really believe they would design CPUs that were not capable of running at their full potential? No, of course not. That's why RC5 can't be the cause of a CPU's failure...but, overclocking can be.

What about certain people on these forums saying that we shouldn't be allowed to use Anandtech forums if we don't crack? They say that this forum is provided to us free of charge, and the least we can do to &quot;pay&quot; for our usage is to contribute. To me, Anandtech is not a &quot;SERVICE&quot; that I use for free. It is a COMMUNITY that I am a part of. I do not, and would never pay to be a part of a community. So, does anyone else see the ludicrousness to the claim that we should crack in order to &quot;earn our keep&quot; around here?

I want to hear from some of the more rational and calm RC5 crackers I have seen posting in this thread (Engineer has impressed me, and I was a little surprised by Russ's liberal attitude in this matter.)

Of course the CPU's are designed to run at their max potential, but I very highly doubt they are designed to run at that potential all the time for a very long time.

I guarentee you that 2 identical CPU's (just say they were literally identical in every single aspect.), would have very different lifespans based on how much they are used.

CPU 1 under normal conditions (some usage at 100%) may last 5-7 years (maybe? i dont know for sure)

CPU 2 under extreme conditions (100% usage 24/7) may last 1-2 (maybe 3) years.

I'm not denying that OC'ing my CPU was the main reason it died. I'm saying that RC5 killed it prematurely.
