I can think of a good reason NOT to run RC5

If you do, you obsess over wasting cpu cycles and putting RC5 on ever last computer in existence. At least Seti at Home has a PURPOSE for crying out loud. With RC5 you are doing nothing more than excersing the processor, (which DOES NOT make it stronger) and giving your self an extremly small chance at winning $1000. Why not just enter one of these cheesy "CLICK HERE TO WIN $1,000,000,000,000,000" banners? Less time, more money, and no muss or fuss. And no obsession over cpu cycles!!!! If you don't want to waste them take the effort, save power, and TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF!!!

I do it because I am going to leave my computer on all the time anyway. So I might as well have it doing something.

Good Evening all!

No flames from me! If you enjoy running a DC program (for whatever reason), than GREAT! If you don't want to....GREAT! It is not the intent of the DC TeAm Anandtech FAMILY to force it upon anybody...Just to educate people that it exists and what it is about, and let them make a decision. Some projects have no "real" purpose other than to prove the point that Distributed Computing is possible...Some have more worthwile causes...

That aside, If you have fun with it and enjoy the team spirit and fun, then welcome to the world of DC...If not, that's OK too, but I would ask nicely to not try to openly campaign against it...Why does it hurt you to make you do so?

Have a good night all! Pleasant Dreams...:)

Well to all these RC5 FANATICS:
WE ARE EDUCATED! THANK YOU!!!!
So please don't educate us anymore!! Just go cracking blocks of pointless, useless code and leave the non-screensaver-data-cracking
population of the forums ALONE!!!

Nothing against SETI, but really, if you run SETI you really aren't doing much of any more good than if you were cracking RC5.

It's funny how you have a Gamma Flux Icon for yourself :) and while you may know about it, there are 100's of people who pass through these forums that may not...

I running an FTP server so might as well help out the team with all the extra cycles out don't use. Second of all we don't do it for money. I don't know why it bothers you so much to start this thread. I mean Anand feels it's important enough for us to have our own forums. And if we're out of line the moderator would have said something. You should come and check the forums. We have a very close community.

The moderators have mandated the RC5 recruiting threads in General Hardware and Off Topic. If you don't like it and don't care about Anandtech team spirit, then don't read the threads.

Why do we even have topics then ?

Why not just have 1 big room where it's a free for all?

Because it would lead to troubles that's why?

That's why before entering the General Hardware forum there's a message

<< General Computer Hardware Discussion. This is the place to discuss the latest computer hardware issues and technology. Please keep the discussion ON TOPIC, and covering computer hardware ONLY. >>

For me it is the teamwork that I enjoy, pulling together, being part of a collaborative effort, :) it is a fun thing.
I have met some of the most intelligent, and friendly, people through Distributed Computing. I have also learned quite a bit about things like networking and alternative O/S's, and I have seen others learning through their participation in Distributed Computing as well.

For these reasons alone Distributed Computing will never be viewed as "pointless" as far as I am concerned, I have invested a small amount time and effort (and hardware:)) and gained in return, knowledge, friendship, and the satisfaction that comes from working with a group towards a common goal.

I like it :)

Budman: I don't mean to sound rude, but until you become a moderator, let the mods decide forum policy.

Anand seems to have an interest in RC5...he's been nice enough to create a link on the homepage to the team info, he's created a forum for Distributed Computing discussion, and he's lent the copyrighted Anandtech name to the RC5 team name and multiple TA domain names. Until the moderators say we're going out of line with the recruiting threads, all you have to do is ignore them.

Budman,

As Sohcan has explained....The Moderators have given TA the OK to post a few recruiting threads in GH and OT...

Anand has also deemed it fitting to place a Team ANANDtech banner on the from page of Anandtech. :)

If Anand approves and the Mod's approve (nice recruiting threads only...), then why not skip over it when you come to it...I skip many messages each day that I don't find appealing...I usually skip these, but I thought this time I could make a difference...I guess not :(
