As soon as I got it home I opened it up and tried to get it working. I put in the software CD and my computer couldn't read it. Eh, no big deal I'll download it from apple. I download iTunes and the ipod update 2.1 software. I'm not sure if the ipod update thing is right so I just install iTunes first. Then I put in the iPod, and iTunes tells me it's not formatted and to format it I need to run the ipod update software. So I run the 2.1 software, it says it formatted my iPod and then I had to plug it into the power jack for the firmware to flash itself. So I do what it said.
Nothing happens.
My iPod works great as a 4gb USB 2.0 hard drive, but whenever I turn it on it just shows a broken menu icon, wonderful.
So I go back to apple's site and notice there is also a 1.3 update, because the 2.1 update is only for iPods with the dock. Since I had no dock, I thought that was the problem.
No. The 1.3 software says "invalid hardware" and will not run. Uh oh.
At this point I decide to research a little. I find out that the ipod mini update software is not available for download, it's only on the CD. Luckily the CD is readable in another computer in my house, so I am able to copy the install files to a shared folder. I run the iPod mini update 1.0 and it again tells me to plug it into the ac adaptor to firmware flash.
This time it works.
Hey! Wake up! This story isn't that boring!
Anyway, after that I have a working iPod. I next realized just how much iTunes blows, and I find and install ephPod. At 3MB/sec I transfer 3.5 gigs of mp3's to my iPod, and when that is done I have a great new toy.
Oh, and it's silver.
EDIT- title adjusted.
