Update - interview on Monday at 11am!

Former experience - 3.5+ years working for a major supermarket chain (cash handling experience over $20k, if that helps any)..banks up here pay $8.50-9+/hr base with no experience, but I can't find a bank job. I'm thinking to ask $9.50/hr - I'd rather risk getting laughed at than risk undercutting myself.

Any experience/tips? I have no idea what they typically pay.

I'd say 9.50 is pushing it.. then again I don't know staples, and typically all bank jobs pay more, and if you have connections in the bank they're easy to land. I'd say more like 7-8... but hey, that's jusy cynical old me.

edit: or minimum wage. <-- definately the most likely, or slightly above.

I do have a connection (branch manager), but I have a feeling (and have been told) that her bank's pay is low..would be a last resort in my case.

always go high and then they'll tell you what you are going to get.

That's what I thought - was just wondering if I was completely unrealistic, or if I could risk shooting higher.

There could possibly be a somewhat knowledgable retail chain salesperson shortly.. :Q Maybe I won't get hired because of that - don't want to break the stereotype or anything..lol :p

I just moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and minimum wage here is $9.50. Much much better than $5 or $6 something back in North Carolina. You can actually support yourself making minimum wage here.

They must have passed one of those "living wage" laws that's intended to make that possible.

That's crazy. 8.50 in 2006, 10.50 in 2008 is the minumum anyone in Sante Fe will make. I wonder who will do the jobs that aren't worth that much?

They'll probably eliminate as many part-time jobs (high school students) as they can.

Have fun with that. I worked at staples since mid 2001 started at $8, now I making a whooping 9.41 with a SOMETIMES bonus. I heard they were hiring people at like 7.50 last time I checked. :(

You should try at Costco & Home Depot or Lowes, they usually pay better and depending on what department you work in will be more enjoyable than boring old staples.

i spoke to the area manager in my local staples two weeks ago. he was visiting the store and we got to chatting about printers. He asked if i was looking for a part time job and i said i had a few hours to spare, if the money was ok. It was not a management position, just hanging out in the computer/printer dept.

He said they normall start at $6.50 no experience and between $7.50 and $8.00 an hour for some experience. He offered me $9.25 an hour and said that it was all in his budget to pay me and it would only be that wage for part time because he would have to get clearance from above to pay me that full time, without a degree. I told him i would think about it and call him.

but my b/f offered me that to stay home for the 20 hours a week. i already work part time in the vet... 25 hours a week and he really likes it when i am a 'homemaker' so would rather not have me work more.

Whew! who cares... enough of my ramblings.

i'd ask for $8.50 tops. I worked at BB before and we got $7.50, and I had over 5 years experience in a supermarket at that time.

This isnt a career. You dont really negotiate salary as a retail sales guy. They'll give you the going rate. Probably $7/hr depending on where you live and whatnot.

Minimum wage should be removed. Let the market dictate the rates. Minimum wage just pushes inflation.

I won't take under $8, and will have a rough time with anything under $9...so I may have to keep looking.

At least that's what I tell myself now. When I run out of money & my truck payment is due.. :(

Looks like I'll be walking out, then.

Your expecting $9/hr for unskilled retail work?

Prepare to be disappointed. $7.50 at best.

BTW: Don't expect to be hired if you didn't answer their 10000 questions like a complete goody-goody.
