I AM THE CABLE ISP GOD!!! <fixed Viper GTS's computer! haha!>

I got a call this afternoon from Gregg. He asked if ATTBI was having problems in the area, but this is one of my three days off, so I told him that I didn't know and gave him some generalized troubleshooting tips for our network. He called back about an hour later asking some more specific questions. Apparently he'd talked to Tier1 and Tier2 already, coming to the conclusion that after disconnecting the home network and not getting an IP, that it was either his network card's fault or TCP/IP.

He described what was happening through the registration process, and I told him exactly what was happening and what he had to do.

I got a call about an hour after that. He kindly informed me that he was picking me up and that I was going to fix his connection because I "knew what the hell I was doing and he didn't" 😀

He came and picked me up. When we got here, I had everything up and running in 10 minutes with no hiccups. 😀

Two hours with a Tier1 and Tier2 tech, plus his own knowledge of networking and the ATTBI network. Nothing.

10 minutes of my horsing around and I'm already posting on AT. 😀

He hates me now. 😎

He probably just had to set everything to dhcp, then shut everything down, and turn it back on in the order of modem first, then router, then PCs...

Well, as you might know if you've read the other thread about ATTBI and static IP's (or was it another one? 😕 ), ATTBI's been having some problems with the registration servers. Most of the problems have been fixed, but there are a few kinks still to be worked out now and then. That's normal. The servers aren't perfect. Gregg's connection dropped, and the servers were not recognizing him when he was trying to get back up. He could get an IP, release to 0.0.0.0 and renew back to the same IP, but couldn't ping or browse. Typical for people who have lost some of their registration information on the "SAS" servers.

So I fixed it. 🙂

disconnected the power to the modem
released / renewed the IP to make sure it wasn't a cached IP or something stupid like that
waited three minutes before powering on the cable modem and letting it fully connect to the network
renewed the IP to a 12.x.x.x
tried the registration page (with specific proxies set to aid in the registration process) and registered successfully

shut off the computer
power cycled the modem for three minutes and then let it sync with the network
started the computer

voila 😎

Very nice Nik 🙂
Now about my cable modem being down apparently for about 6 hours today while I was gone... can you give me a temporary boost in d/l speed so I can catch back up on my kazaa downloads? Pretty please? 🙂😉

Um... he's in his room (just down the hall) and has gone to bed. He just called my cell phone sitting next to me from his cell phone in his bed and asked if I wanted to have butt-sex with him :Q 😕

He's crazy.

I fix his cable internet connection and he goes to bed. Sheesh... the man doesn't know the power of usenet. 😉 😛

haha - TheGrandCow - it would be nice if I had that power, but I can only uncap you to 3Mbps upstream and 3Mbps downstream. I dunno if that will be enough 🙂

...And you didn't take him up on it?! :Q What's wrong with you?

This happens to mine all the time.. no need for all that crap.. just unplug the modem and plug it back in after a few seconds.. switch it back on and all is well.. if not then do all the crap above but it's never been necessary and my connection to ATTBI is flaky..

I do that before I even call tech support if I have a problem with RoadRunner. Well all except the registration part. They love it when I call because I say I have done this, that and the other and all three machines are still having the same problem so when are you guys going to fix it. A 5 minute call is because I spent 3 minutes chatting with them.

sweet 🙂 Now, stop stealing my thunder. I'm gloating in the fact that the Great And Mighty Viper GTS has asked me to fix his computer after two hours of dinking around with official on-the-job tech support and I fixed it in 10 minutes 😛

Hehe...

I've developed a handbook for our customers that would solve 50-60% of thier problems before they call.. One problem though. Management won't let me complete it and send it out.

If it worked it would lower our call volume we can't have that now can we?

I LOVE the fact that most Tier1 techs are freaking morons. I usually get "wow, you seem to actually know what you're doing" and "that last guy was a freakin moron" and stuff. Now, I know there are fully and over qualified Tier1 techs out there (like Narzy), but I don't like them. It's the dumb ones that provide me with job security 😛

Do you work for ATTBI?

*Two hours with a Tier1 and Tier2 tech, plus his own knowledge of networking and the ATTBI network: $.10/minute * 120 minutes=$12.00
*Driving 60mph racing to pick up ffmcobalt 20 miles away: $5.00 in gas
*Owning ViperGTS: Priceless
