So by purchasing a home, I've made money just sitting in it.

Does it triple in value every decade? Because typical extremely low risk mutual funds do. The kind that they recommend old people invest in because it's low risk (more bonds).

Move to a small community off the radar ... you'll meet a ton of people, AND be able to afford housing.

You can own a house and nice car and NOT grow up.

You do, however, have to make payments on time. Growing up is really optional. ;)

if you have a decent job, you could at least afford to live in an apartment, right? lots of people have to do that before they can buy a house, you know.

That's one reason I'm moving to the albuquerque area...you can still buy a decent house for $120-$150k.

To top it off, I'm up in quite a bit of debt from college loans, which will take quite a while to pay off. My one guilty pleasure is that I have a nice car that I lease -- but it's a big chunk of change and probably unwise, but I don't spend money on anything else. Besides, given all my headaches I look at that car like therapy.

Anyhoo... 24 and still living home (I can't afford to move out, even if I gave up the car), it makes me scared to think what happens later in life. Anyways... I think I need to win the lotto.

Anybody else have fears about the future? I like to think I'm pretty grown up now, but apparently looking at how hard and how long you have to go before you can get anywhere in life, makes me think I'm still quite the infant.

I totally hear you man. I moved out when I was 18 supporting myself completely. The rent over here is crazy, I'm barely able to get by. I'm not even thinking of buying a house right now.

Hopefully the real-estate bubble will burst and we'll be able to afford some decent housing :)

You need to make a close look at your budget. $700/month for a leased car? That's too much. Get a used car and cut that expense down fast. Look at other expenses that you can cut.

You need to make a list of HAVE TO HAVE such as rent, food, utilities, etc. and NICE TO HAVE such as entertaintment, beer, eat out, etc. Start cutting back on nice to have items and make a budget and stick to it. It will not be easy and fun but if you don't do it now, you will be in the same situation 10 to 15 years from now.

<<<<<-------- moved out after college, bought a new SUV with and paid in cash so no car note, zero debts <no credit cards debt and student loan paid off on time>, saving money to buy a nice house within a few years.

I done it, you or anyone can do it too.
