I am in love with Chevrolet Cruze.

I can only tolerate the new Mazda3 in hatch form.
Sometimes I find the Cruze looks nice, other times really not. Depends on the trim and color I guess. Black with the nicer rims on it and it looks decent. Has nice looking front.

If you can actually get over 40mpg, it's pretty a pretty nice vehicle for the price.

It's almost entirely dependent on your speed. If you drive the speed limit, you'll easily nail 40mpg. If you go 80mph and there's nobody in front of you, it will be nowhere near 40mpg. There's not much "skill" involved when it comes to highway mileage.
City is different. Changing the way you drive is everything.

Focus > Cruze

Focus sedan is definitely not good looking. The design does not feel streamlined.

I cannot comment on the overall characteristics, but cruze wins by a long margin on looks.

Also, I've warmed up to Mazda 3's looks.. and IMO, that design work on both hatch and sedan.

My mom owns a Cruze for business and loves it. She had a 2009 Jetta TDI that was in a wreck, so she bought the Cruze because of the gas mileage. The price of diesel negated the benefits of the TDI. She loves it. I've driven it a bit and it is a fine car. She has the turbo and it feels a little weak down low. You have to really lay into it to get moving. The gas mileage is ridiculous on it though.
