What's special? How many IT guys do you know make 200k a year? For instance, my first job out of college, I started at a whopping $26,500 and that was with a BS and MS in Computer Science. Of course, I didn't stay there long. I have never met any IT guy that made over $50,000. I've met several contractors that make in the $100,000 to $200,000 but none of them are full time IT guys in a company.

Eh? I didn't think it was that low. IT as in what, help desk? My brother is a network admin for a plastic bottle manufacturing company with I think like 30+ plants (total guess going off fact they have like 7 in Cali and they used to be based in Austin until the move to Atlanta). He's in charge of the ones in southern california and I think the one they have in mid-cali and makes probably 80k salery and another I think 20k from his consulting at a mailing company.

I'm sure his boss, the one in charge of him and the others at his level should make like 150k at least.

There's a huge range depending on location and what kind of company you work for.
That job was in the middle of Indiana (lacking IT jobs) and was for a state funded university.

Here in Phoenix, I've seen people doing tech support for as low as $12/hour and inept contractors charging $95/hour for something I used to do for free to help people in college. It's all about your attitude, your skills, and/or how much you are willing to BS.

Well I used to make $60K as a systems analyst, but that was in downtown Philly where the taxes are ridiculous.

I took a $3,500 cut in base pay to work out in the suburbs and my take-home is identical.

I had a recruiter call me the other day asking if I wanted to do contract work at SAP for $30 an hour... but there would be no benefits or paid time off. Not sure that it would be worth it, despite the chance at getting my foot in the door at SAP.

No. $30 is about $60,000 a year... but you have no benefits, no vacation, no sick time, and your taxes increase by 15.3% immediately when you become self-employed.

the thing is you can have two people sitting right next to each other doing the same job, but one makes twice what the other does.

I don't make under $50k a year, I make a very decent living... And I'll repeat - there's no reason a company should be paying a guy $200k a year to do something that someone with equal skills would be willing to do for half that. And I guarantee you there is someone out there with skills equal to forcesho's who would be willing to do his job for half of what he makes. That's the only reason I had any doubt. Unless he's leaving out something significant, then his employer must either have no clue what they could be paying him or they don't care about pissing money down the drain.

Umm, yes they do. Many bill out for 150-200 an hour...40 hours per week.

SAP basis, net architect, security come to mind.

when he chimed in we were talking about basic tech skills. NOT jobs like those.

which is where all the disbelief comes in. I agree a specialist such as those can make 200k but not a low level tech job.

as i said Some positions will make it. just not a tech as OP said and forscoco said he did.

I work in greenwich ct, and yes a lot of people makes over 100k in nyc.
I'm not contracted, I do my 40 hours, and sometimes less.. lately I been bored at work and I leave by 4

i supply my w2 for 2003 & 2004 and the 1040s, i'm not the boss but he gets paid 500k a year

one more thing i left out, i also do security in the firm, i carry a taser and shot gun with my body armor at work... and i have a 30-06 sniper rifle in my trunk. I also have 5 nbc gas mask in case we get attack.

So you do more then a help desk type job that the OP was talking about.

What are allt he jobs you have? Help desk and security? In NYC the two i can believe its $200k (dont the cops make like $100k there?).

So while you do make $200k its not just for a basic IT job. its also for security (wich sounds bad if you need all that gear).

BTW why do you need all that gear? are they really that worried about you getting attacked?

Not much harder. When I was younger and an idiot, I forged W2's to get approved for a car loan, as well as rent an apartment. Took me about 5 miuntes to do. I was approved for both the car and the apartment. I didn't go through with either, as my conscience got the best of me
