If it is mandatory, its not a tip. Its a fucking tax.

Ate out with the company tonight, as the manager/boss, I paid the bill. With a party of 14, they auto added 17% tip to the bill. I just rounded the total to the next dollar. Done. I'm not too crazy about tipping a certain percentage, that's why I like it when they put it on the bill and do the math for me.

That wasn't a tip, it was a "gratuity charge". There's usually a tip line after the "gratuity charge" they automatically add to "large" parties.

You'd think that they'd be happier that you brought more customers to their restaurant, but nope, it's an "inconvenience" to them, so they tack on a mandatory "gratuity charge". What a bullshit term...

This tipping shit sounds nuts. If I ever visit America it's really gonna do my head in.

On a side note, WTF is with the quarter?

It's the wackiest denomination. 25c? LOL. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

:p

I usually do 15 for decent service, 10 for poor service, 5 for very poor service, 20 for good service, and 25 for great service.

Wait, you still tip for very poor service?

I give a dollar as an insult at a nice place if I got poor service.

If I get really poor service, they'll be lucky if I pay.

In other words, she steals from her employer and you abet her theft...

Yes, but . . . it's a common practice that goes on quite often, although not to that extreme.

You go regularly to a bar with a group of friends or co-workers, and a good, smart waitress give you great service and let you slide just a bit on the bill, maybe not charging for every single drink or throwing in some appetizers for free or whatnot, and in return you all chip in and give her an extra healthy tip.

I can't say it isn't what you say it is, but it's also more like a getting frequent drinker miles -- you're happy, the waitress is happy, and the owner still makes a healthy profit and gets loyal, free spending, repeat customers.

Wait, you still tip for very poor service?

Often times, "poor service" is not the fault of your waitron, but rather the kitchen or customer overload. Taking it out financially on the hapless wage and tip drone is just ugly business. Don't be that guy.

I usually do 0 for decent service, 0 for poor service, 0 for very poor service, 0 for good service, and 0 for great service.

Get a real job punks.

Tipping is fail, anyone who tips needs to be horse whipped for keeping such a convention alive.

In Canada waiters get paid hourly, at least $10.25 an hour, i think that is the average minimum wage. Tips are extra, no entitlement.

In the states they basically work for free and their only income is tips. That's why they feel entitled i guess. Weird way to do business, ought to be illegal to hire someone for no wage.

Try that in Vancouver... it's to the point here where 15% is expected for basic service.

Nice move. I'll be doing the same thing if this ever happens to me. It's hard to believe someone would actually chase you down over 50 cents.

Dont get me wrong though. If bartender takes care of me, I take care of them. At Drais in Vegas, there's a bartender that makes my drinks 80% alcohol (with top shelf bottles) and 20% mixer and would give me free waters if I ask. She would charge me a flat $20-30 bucks the entire night for about 4-6 drinks and I'd tip her $60-80. Keep in mind this is $15 a drink and $10 a water lol.

In other words, she steals from her employer and you abet her theft...

That's exactly what it sounds like to me.

If you cheap bastards dont want to tip. Then stay the hell home.

Someone mentioned the Ramsay show about restaurants being overstaffed. Most restaurants do this because every third server is late or no shows once a month.

Then entire restaurant industry is subsidized by tips. While I would love to not have to pay extra the entire restaurant industry would collapse as we know it in the US. Expect horrible service just like best buy.....no incentive.....no performance...

The bill ended up being $18. I had $20 and a quarter on me, so I just gave them that instead of charging it. So what happens? The boss chased me down to say I did not tip 15%. I mean, OK, it's 50 cents dude...I really did not think you would mind....

So, fine, he wants the 15%? I demand my cash back and take out my Amex card. He was not happy at all, but wtf! really, all this 50 cents?

How about not being a cheap bastard in the first place; then you won't have someone chasing you down. Shame on you for leaving less than 15% in the first place.

And the only way to keep good service would be for the bar or restaurant to pay huge huge salaries.

This place has a conditioned response to Gods, guns, and tipping. It is like someone saying bet to Fred Flintstone.

My normal tipping is 15% for service that is positive, 20%-25% for extraordinary. I don't recall leaving less than 15%, but have offered advice to wait staff and managers.

Most of the time, the bartender reaches into a fridge, removes cap, and puts the beer on the bar. Sometimes it is dispensing tap beer into a mug. That, and pouring a wine for my SO gets a buck. For the rare times we get mixed drinks, it might be $2 tip each.

I'm just amazed at how incompetent the US restaurant industry must be when the rest of the world functions fine without tips.

I've said this many times before, but I wish we had the same system as in Europe. Service is included in the price and you can leave an extra Euro or two for good service. So much saner.

I still try to tip well in the US though, no point in fucking over waiters because they're part of a screwed up system.

Some of you assholes need to cook your own meals. If you're that tight to bitch about the tip, you shouldn't be eating out. Fucking commoners.

15% is a bit much. I leave 10% for the most part.

Jesus, are you kidding me?

The OP's ridiculous manager aside,

Waiters are the hardest working people on earth, and make like $2-$3 from their employer. They survive on tips; they have to be quick, organized, polite, and deal with assholes when they complain about stupid shit. And most people, if the kitchen fucks up an order OR the waiter makes a mistake, diners will take it out on them by withholding tips.

Way to fuck over a waiter, champ.

Tell him to get fucked. Tips are optional...not mandatory.

Not really. Tips are EXPECTED and have always been for service related jobs as part of the price for that labor. It's only in modern times that the poor (whether financially or simply mannered) decided to make it about being extra or an entitlement.

The standard for food service is 15% and the level of that service is based on the restaurant and usually dictated by food cost. A <$10 meal will have you sharing a server with more people, possibily having to ask for a refill, etc. A $100+ per plate meal may get you your own server that's dedicated to only your needs.

For bags and other things, there is usually a fixed dollar figure per bag, per day of stay, for the type of service it is.

If you can't afford to eat out (and if you are debating a 15% tip you truly cannot afford to no matter what you think), then brown bag it groundlings.

Chased you down? That would make me get my cash back, charge it and leave zero tip. No tip plus merchant fees. Double whammy!

Same here

In general I tip good 20-30% if the service is good

But if you expect it or do a shitty job etc....don't expect ANYTHING.
