I have a good idea of how you're feeling. We put my cat to sleep a couple years ago, he was about 13 years old and we had him for about 12 and a half years. He had urinarty tract problems when he was about a year old and was on special food and was fine for many years. Then a couple years ago he was acting like he was having trouble again. Long story short, his kidneys failed, and after a couple weeks at the vet, a surgery, and $2000 the vet told us he had done all he could do, and he may live another painful month before he died on his own. So we decided not to make him suffer. We made the decision over the phone, none of us could bear to be there when they put him to sleep and I still feel horrible about it. He hated the vet... he was one of those cats that went into attack mode every time he had to go to the vet. So the last thing he experienced was being scared and held down by someone he didn't know while they put him to sleep. My dad picked up his remains and he's buried in the back yard now... I just feel horrible that nobody was there with him. :(

your b/f is lucky to have you.

i was never so lucky with my exwife, may she ever burn in a fire or at least get run over by a steamroller.

Unfortunatly our dog had to suffer for 4 weeks because she had just had a litter of puppies, I remember watching her just waste away to practically nothing, if was very heartbreaking, when my father made the decision, I remember Doxin Kara III(she was a show dog)gave him a good bye lick just before the vet injected the stuff into her, I think she understood what was happening and was happy to have the suffering end.
My dad stopped breeding rottwielers after that, and the family hasnt had a pet dog since 1996

One thing I think is interesting is that no matter what our political, religious, racial, or social standing, when a loved pet dies we can all rally around the person and show our support irrespective of the foregoing.
I had to put my childhood pet cat down last year. She lived to be 20 which is a looong time for a cat; but she developed some kind of cancer in her jaw (we joked that maybe she was smoking or chewing tobacco!) and just couldn't move her mouth to eat anymore.

To the OP, don't worry about your BF; you showed your support as much as you could and he'll understand that.

I'm sorry for your loss. A few years ago, we had to put down the family poodle. He had been with the family for 12+ years. In the end, it was time to put him down. He was blind and deaf and had arthritis in is hind legs. It was still a very emotional experience to see a very dear friend for the last time. I will never forget Bif. He was my best friend.

Sincere condolences from an animal lover. It took me back to the many pets I have taken to the vet for the last time, but as I type this I am willing myself to remember all the joy and love that preceded those sad days.

You're a wonderful person, I can only hope my gf cares as much for me as you do for your bf...

I have 4 cats/1 dog/1 parrot and can't imagine losing any of them either...

I'm tearing up at work reading this, hang in there... =)

My heart goes out to you . My husband and I went threw A similiar thing with his cat Smokey. God Bless you both. Just sitting here thinking about your sorrow breaks our hearts. Dave has seen so trerible things in his life and to see him suffer over Smokey the way he did was just heart breaking.
