That's really sad. I love dogs too much, and that's why I'll never have one. Wouldn't want to go through all the pain.

 for you and your b/f. Just remember the happy times with the puppy, that's all that matters.

A good dog is a better companion than probably anything or anyone else you will meet.

I've had my current dog since she was a pup - we bred one of our others, now deceased, and she was a puppy from that litter. I happened to be the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes, and she's been stuck on me ever since.

I dunno what I'm gonna do when her time comes. It's gonna be hard. I mean, we've had many dogs, and others have had to have been put down, but none of them were mine...she's mine...(or, as anyone with dogs probably knows, more accurately I'm hers)...

Anyways, condolences to the bf, and thumbs up to you for thinkin' of him. He'll appreciate it, no doubt.

I am very sorry for you and your BFs loss. When we had to do this with our cat Beau last month I am not ashamed to admit I was a basket case. Fortunately we have a really good relationship with our vets due to the number of animals we have and they have always helped us a lot through these times. You should never feel you are horrible given what I know you do for animals from your posts on these forums. :(

Jesus Christ...this is actually putting me to tears. I'm being serious :(

It's sad to say goodbye to a dog...the only creature in the world that loves you regardless of how you look, smell, feel, and act.

*heres to the dogs of old, current, and future* :)

We both cried and cried when we put our cat to sleep. Don't feel bad about not watching, KarenMarie - your bf knows why you can't and knows that you are there to support him. I remember one day my husband came home and was crying a few weeks later. He had picked up our kitty's remains from the vet and we both sobbed again :(

A stray that we had semi-adopted got hit by a car last year. HE rushed her to the vet. HE assisted the vet at 10PM... i joined up later and waited in the waiting room. After about 2 hours, when it was obvious that she would not pull thru I went in to say good bye. When I went in, she had three different things hooked up to her, and I lost it. I BooHoo'ed like a baby and my knees gave way. He caught me. He was solid and steady for me.

But when it came time for us to leave... he went back one more time, since the vet would not turn off the respirator until we left. And there was this big hunk of a guy, the solid, steady one who makes everything ok... he leaned over her broken body and huge tears fell from his eyes as he whispered to her how much he loved her. And then he kissed her battered and bloddy face and with tears streaming down his face, he told her how sorry he was that he could not save her. It destroyed me. And I never loved another human being as much as I did him, right then.

That was the first and only time I had seen him cry until today.

And I can only imagine what it took from him to go to get her, bathe her, take her to he park and be with her until the last breath. All the while trying to protect me and his mom. Then sitting in the jeep in the stinking heat, trying to collect himself so he did not come in to upset me.

I can only hope that one day... if i am really good... i can grow up to be just like him.

Stop making me tear up. :'(

I'm sad just reading that. How much worse will it be to stop life support on a loved one, or when an elderly person says he/she is ready... reminds me of that episode of scrubs

Goddang, I was holding one of my dogs when I started to read this.

I don't know how I'm going to deal with the deaths of my two dogs, one of them has been with me basically my entire life and the other sleeps with me nightly.

I guess I'd actually recommend that you give your boyfriend his space. I know that if I lost either of my dogs I'd probably just want to go off to some remote place for a while, by myself...but that might just be me.

The lives of those of us who are lucky enough to experience the unconditional love of a pet are forever enriched by it. :(:brokenheart:

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

I remember when my dad had to have our pet rottwieler put down because she had stomach cancer, that was the only time i ever saw my father cry, he loved that dog, we had her since she was 6 weeks old and she was about 9 years old when she was put down..that was one of the saddest days in my life.
