I remember one day my husband came home and was crying a few weeks later. He had picked up our kitty's remains from the vet and we both sobbed again :(

A stray that we had semi-adopted got hit by a car last year. HE rushed her to the vet. HE assisted the vet at 10PM... i joined up later and waited in the waiting room. After about 2 hours, when it was obvious that she would not pull thru I went in to say good bye. When I went in, she had three different things hooked up to her, and I lost it. I BooHoo'ed like a baby and my knees gave way. He caught me. He was solid and steady for me.

But when it came time for us to leave... he went back one more time, since the vet would not turn off the respirator until we left. And there was this big hunk of a guy, the solid, steady one who makes everything ok... he leaned over her broken body and huge tears fell from his eyes as he whispered to her how much he loved her. And then he kissed her battered and bloddy face and with tears streaming down his face, he told her how sorry he was that he could not save her. It destroyed me. And I never loved another human being as much as I did him, right then.

That was the first and only time I had seen him cry until today.

And I can only imagine what it took from him to go to get her, bathe her, take her to he park and be with her until the last breath. All the while trying to protect me and his mom. Then sitting in the jeep in the stinking heat, trying to collect himself so he did not come in to upset me.

I can only hope that one day... if i am really good... i can grow up to be just like him.

A Dog's Prayer

by Beth Norman Harris

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though you had no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest -- and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

In the last five years I have lost my mother, my father, and my dog. I am ashamed to admit that I have made peace with my parents and miss them dearly, but I still have a long ways to go to get over the passing of my dog.

You are a good person, KarenMarie.

I had to take my dog and put him down also. Yes, I cried like a little girl! I don't blame him for not taking you. RIP Doggie!

For Real...my dog is 12 years old, inconinent, deaf, and he has seizures. Still I could not bear having to put him to sleep despite all the crap I go through cleanin' up his messes. I wish I had some pics of him on the compy from when he was younger....

many times

Yeah rules schmules. While most rules are upheld, there are a few mods that ban willy-nilly just because they don't like what you have to say or haven't taken their mydol or something.

It's better than it used to be, but there was a point two years ago that it was dubbed banandtech because the mods would ban for damn year fvcking everything, legit or not.

I printed that out for him. thanks for posting it.

I don't know... while it may make him feel better, it might also drive home again the pain of losing the dog...

I honestly believe that the hardest thing to do is to getover the loss of a pet. And here is my reasoning:

When a loved one dies (spouse, parent, sibling, etc) it is easier to come to terms with because most of the time the decision is out of our hands.

When the time comes for a pet to leave us, we are the ones who make the decision to bring that pet's life to an end. So we not only have the burden of the loss, but some guilt/anger/grief at having to make that decision. But it helps to deal with that decision that if you gave your pet a happy life, good food, clean water, a soft spot to sleep, a scratch behind the ears, play time, etc.... then you have been a good master and that you have done the most humane thing to end their suffering as quick and painless as possible.

my last dog died in his sleep. I was so young that it really didnt affect me much. we got him when he was older anyways. but now that i've grown up with this dog, I just couldn't imagine it. although you can see the dilation starting in his eyes and his ears are starting to go. :(

I agree with this 100%.

And while the cat in my post above really devistated the both of us. It was not us who put her there. She was a stray in the street who showed up at my door for food one day and spent the next three years being an indoor/outdoor cat... We loved her. But what happened to her.. as sad as it was... was not our doing.

I just could not go with him... to his mom's house to get her and look at her, while he bathed her, and spend time in a park talking to her, loving her... having her look at you... knowing that you are taking her to her death. Even though she was in pain and this is for the best... I could not do it. I just could not.

I do not have the strength.

And as for the b/f... not only did he do this... but he went about it in a way as to protect the ppl he loved. He did it ALL alone, so he did not have to have anyone else he loved have to go thru it.
