Should have posted earlier, within the first 5 posts someone would have told you had the herp. :)

I had shingles, what a bitch. I felt healthy enough, it just itched something fierce and I was pretty desperate for some relief. I went to the local drug emporium a few times and bought a variety of lotions. Also contacted the federal government, who will send you stuff about shingles. By the time that info came I was way past the worst phase and it was useless to me... i.e. many weeks. Having done research, I realize that the same virus that can give you shingles can give you meningitis, potentially very serious, even deadly. It's also the same virus that give you chicken pox, and people who get that always have the virus in their system. Normally, after the chicken pox goes away the virus doesn't cause any symptoms but stays dormant, and is thought to reside in your spine. Some people at some later time in their life experience further effects from the virus, generally being a shingles attack, which is usually not dangerous so much as a rather uncomfortable condition that subsides and goes away after some weeks. Meningitis, is probably the most dangerous possible effect of the virus. Shingles usually only happens once to a person if it happens at all. I think it can happen more than once, but my impression is that recurrence of shingles is fairly uncommon.

Robin? Robin Williams? Is that you? :D

OP, glad to hear you got through this in fair shape. Hang in there.

I've had too dammed many epidurals to count and once in a while I'll get the headaches that you're experiencing...they suck big time, and (at least in my experience) nothing really helps them when they happen. Time should make them go away.

Don't ya hate it when the morons in the ER's or doctor's offices can't hit a dammed vein? I have veins that look like a roadmap of super highway proportions...yet 50% of the time, it takes a nurse or phlebotomist (sp?) 3 or more tries to get it right. Maybe they need to hire heroin addicts for that job...they rarely miss...:D

You got fast service because ERs do not work on a first come first serve basis.

I had an elergic reaction to some Yellow Jackets and they didn't even have all the paper work done before they took me away to shoot me full of drugs. Never before was I worried for my life (it was a minor reaction). I never knew I was allergic to yellow jackets before and they were freaking out. It freaked me out and made me realize how serious it could have gotten.

Bee-sting allergies can have you dead unless you happen to live in a hospital.

Wow. That's quite a story, glad to hear you're coming out of it ok. What are the symptoms of that mastoid process infection? I didn't even know you COULD get an infection there.

Glad you're ok, I bet words cannot describe the suckiness of the whole event. Also glad to hear the Hospital actually took care of you and you didn't die in the waiting room like most people :p

1 evening in the ER, 3 days in the ICU and 3 days in a standard room.

Yes, because the pain in my head and neck only happens when I am sitting up or standing. I am almost pain free when laying down whith my head on a single pilow. That's means it's the spinal tap and lack of pressure in the brain when upright it causes that is causing the pain.

I still have meningitis and will for a couple weeks probably. My weakened body will take a while to beat back the virus, I'm sure.

Mastoid infection USUALLY comes with a middle ear infection that is left too long. The funky part, and why it wasn't diagnosed until I had an MRI of my head, is that I had NO symptoms (other than a low grade fever and malaise) and no ear infections at the time.

I am figuring with all the flying back and forth to CA when my mom broke her hip, some pathogen got forced from my middle ear to the mastoid without infecting my middle ear in the process. Who knows, though.

Weird, huh?
