good point and smart move. quitting without having something lined up definitely should be a last resort. good luck man.

6 sick days isnt too much albeit most people that work for me in a corporate setting only have 1 to 2 sick days a week but in all fairness it is office work. I am sure people in your line of work call in all the time and if you are a good employee what are they going to do about it.

If it had been me, right when he made the threat to write me up I would have made a threat to quit if I was ever harassed by him again. I dont put up with threats at work. Either chew my ass or leave me alone, but dont play the fake tough guy act with me, I wont put up with it.

I guess my current job must be pretty good by comparison. My boss is a dickhole but he doesnt bug me about little shit like being sick or hurt. If I tell him I cant come in then he finds a replacement or does it himself. He doesnt ask for doctors notes or other nonsense.

Still, after you get a couple of things figured out, you SHOULD go to the guy's manager and complain.

I remember about 6 years ago, in grad school... I felt very sick one day and excused myself to the prof, telling him I'll go home because I am very weak and dizzy... he was cross and said he came to work every class, even when his 6 year-old had a flu (WTF?!)... that same evening I found out I had chicken pox... when I returned to school I was tempted to go and tell him he'd been a dick, but it wasn't wise to do so... although it would've made me feel better about the whole thing, since his attitude was just wrong.

This is probably what I'd do myself, these days...

The US lower and middle management is full of cockstains like this guy. I'd say the vast majority of lower and middle managers have no clue how to manage anyone out of a wet paper bag, let alone a team of subordinates.

Basically, he's just trying to pull a power trip on you. You missing time/appointments means he loses a bonus/raise/opportunity to get a hand job from his boss so he's going to try to strong arm you rather than actually, you know, MANAGE by asking you to bring a Dr.'s note and respecting your seniority by not making a big deal out of it until you actually start missing a lot of time.

Heaven forbid this guy has to actually analyze a situation, consider the facts, and make an informed decision when he can just fly off the handle and swing his cock around!

Does your company have a written sick-leave policy?

That may be the key to how to handle this situation.

IF you're in compliance with the policy, tell him and possibly talk to the HR department.

IF you're OUT of compliance...suck it up and live with the consequences.

I agree that missing yesterday looks particularly bad...but sometimes coincidences do happen...

My boss will give you crap for coming to work sick. If one person shows up sick, that puts us all at risk of getting sick, that means even more missed days. When you are sick, you stay home. Of course most of us can work from home if we need to. If they give you sick days, I don't see how they can be upset you use them.

please tell me your co-workers think it's BS too.

otherwise you might be the whipping boy and not know it yet.

just sayin'

The problem is, you're usually infectious for a few days before you start to notice symptoms.

What was so important about yesterday? Anyway, tell your manager to stop bitching and hire some more people to handle situations like this.

Probably, a boat load of people wanting their TVs delivered and installed for the football games.

I got fired from a summer job once (at a grocery store) because I got the stomach flu and missed one day. It was in the 2nd week of employment, so I understand it looked bad to call in sick so early, but even with a doctor's visit, etc, they told me "too bad." Worked out-I got a much better job for the rest of the summer. It's crazy how presumptuous people can be, though.

Ya know, it seems to me that once you get a rep for never taking sick days....people will ride you if you even take a single sick day. For example, I will only take on average one sick day every couple of years. However a few months ago I got food poisoining and was off for a few days...holy shit. You'd thought that I had taken a huge dump in the middle of the office by the amount of stink it kicked up. However the people that are sick every second week never get anything said about them.

Moral of the story. Take lots of sick days when you first start working, so people expect it from you. 😀

Your record indicates you're a great employee. You seem like a reasonable guy. Just ignore your manager. He's being a dick and has nothing to stand on. If you're sick, take sick days. That's what they're there for.

some companies just have that "no sick days" culture

you can conform or move on, you won't change them
