Super Cliffs: Manager = cockmaster

Yeah, that pisses me off. I'd complain to his manager, I'd point the facts out.

I'd also probably suck it up and just take it because if you're thinking of the manager's position, he's new, he doesn't want to seem like a pushover, he's not your best friend, he sees your record, and he wants to make sure you don't start slacking. So while he is a major cock master, he is only doing his job.

yeah, there's nothing like leeching off other people is there?

Who am I leeching off? Maybe we should get your ass to the office to design bridges.

Touche senor.

That may be the key to how to handle this situation.

IF you're in compliance with the policy, tell him and possibly talk to the HR department.

IF you're OUT of compliance...suck it up and live with the consequences.

I agree that missing yesterday looks particularly bad...but sometimes coincidences do happen...

Best suggested solution. That's why they have policies for things like this.

So where do you work? If not the company name, at least the type of store--national chain, local mom/pop, etc.

Go one above his head and file a complaint with HR. Sick days are part of your benefits if they are paid...if not, you still have a duty to make sure your illness does not spread around the office. Seriously, I would file a complaint pronto against the new manager.

My boss will give you crap for coming to work sick. If one person shows up sick, that puts us all at risk of getting sick, that means even more missed days. When you are sick, you stay home. Of course most of us can work from home if we need to. If they give you sick days, I don't see how they can be upset you use them.
The problem is, you're usually infectious for a few days before you start to notice symptoms.
How's that a problem?
Why should he go in and continue to expose others if they may not have already been infected?
Maybe I just misread what you are saying.

Yes, my name is Chuck Bartouski. Thank god its not at best buy. We do not do as much business as them ;) but we're a decent sized chain

As for everything else - I had my other boss (He is in charge of operational issues while this guy was sales and scheduling) put a note in my file. Its not an official report...yet but it can be if I need it to be. In the mean time I will continue doing everything (I am the only one who takes the vehicles in for maintenance, files the weekly sales reports, is on the conference call etc) and when I leave - fvck him.

So I felt like $hit yesterday. Headache, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose (went through half a big box of tissue), ear infection and lightheaded and I think I sneezed 87 times. So - I took a sick day. My fourth since Jan 1 2007 (excluding 2 days I missed due to a work related accident resulting in bruised ribs)

My new manager who I have worked with for about a month calls me out on it today. Note that I am still hacking and blowing my nose constantly

Manager: We really needed you yesturday
Me: I know. I'm sorry but I just couldn't come in
Manager: I was sick too, but I came in (please note that we have two totally different jobs. He manages people from an office. I go into customer's homes and lift large TVs/teach them how to use computers)
Me: Well, I didn't feel well enough to do my appointments
Manager: Did you get a doctor's note?
Me: Uh...it was Sunday so no
Manager: Uh-huh. Didn't go to Urgent care or the Emergency room then?
Me: No I did not
-Manager: If it wasn't bad enough to go to Urgent Care or the Emergency room then it -wasn't bad enough to miss work
(WHAT???????????? If he wants to pay my medical bills sure but non emergency emergency room visits cost alot)
Me: Uh.... sorry
Manager: If it happens again I will have to write you up

Ok - so I admit that yesterday was a bad day to miss. My schedule was full of appointments. But shit happens. And being written up? I only missed 6 total shifts in over a year. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and pulled up the SAA (Scheduled Attendance Adhearance report - basically the higher the percentage the more it means you were early/worked other people's shifts. If it is negative then you come in late/miss shifts)

Mine is the highest of ALL the hourly employees (60+ employees and we can't pull up salaried). So I show it to him.

Manager: *shrug* You have still missed three days since I have been here
Me: Two of those were because I got hurt at work (and excused by a friggen DOCTOR)
Manager: *another shrug* You've still missed three days. The next one is a write up.

Now, I have worked for this company long enough (much longer than him) to know that he doesn't have a leg to stand on with his last threat. But I mean COME ON! 6 DAYS! Thats IT! And two of those were because of my accident and a DOCTOR told me I wasn't allowed to work those days! I mean...who.......how....GRRRRRRRRR! :| :|

THEN - a customer who had to be rescheduled for today calls me out too
Customer: You were just 'sick' (air quotes and everything) because you wanted to watch the football games
-Uh no, I really felt bad and even passed out on the couch before the end of the Packers/Giants game
Customer: Sure.
She then tried to berate me into giving ALL her money back. Sure lady, we missed our appointment yesterday so you can have your 46" Samsun LCD for free. yeah right.

Great. Now I am sick, tired AND pissed off at the world.

Cliffs:
-I was sick
-I missed a day of work
-My manager is a dick
-A huge dick
-a big veiny SOB
-Customer is a dick too

Four simple words:

Go fuck yourself asshole.

Make sure you look him in the eye when you say it.

Tell him if he threatens you like that again you till take his ass to HR pronto.

It's illegal in my state for an employer to ask for a doctor's note.

Sadly more and more employers are requiring doctor's notes due to employee abuse. In my company we used to get 6 sick occurances. Each sick occurance could be up to 5 business days prior to short term leave kicking in.

The company stopped this as every year we had a high percentage of people taking 30 sick days EXACTLY.

Now we get 5 sick days, doctor's notes are not required.

The saddest part is most of the places that require them don't offer health benefits.

so go in to work and puke all over him, that would teach him. Knowing how to puke at will is a great skill you must obtain.

so you took off 4 days out of possible 15 working days and whine about him being pissed off?

Where do you get 15 working days? I said since Jan 2007. I work on average 4.5 days a week with us being open 362 days a year. That equals ~245 working days (including the first part of this year) of which I have missed 4 days or 1.6%

I really hate that. If I'm sick, I'm not coming in. I'm not going to get any better by working all day. I'll probably just make more people sick. I miss maybe 2 days a year and luckily I don't get crap for it.

That is because Pale Rider is wrong. The manager of the OP is a dick anyway; just not an illegal dick AFAIK.

<-- Is a manager in IL.

How good is this job? That would have been a great time to say "Well, since you feel that way, you're going to have to do a lot of rescheduling because (airquote) I quit."
