Hypothetical Situation *poll*

Just recently got into an argument with my roommate over something and want to know others opinions. Please don't let this thread get out of hand as I have no intention of causing any harm or getting myself or anyone else banned.

So, let's say that you're an electrician/auto mechanic/plumber/whatever and you are training a group of three people to be an assistant for you. Imagine all three candidates are equally qualified for the position. If one day you noticed that one of the trainees had a swastika (Nazi oriented) tattooed on his head would this effect the likelihood of your hiring them?

Again, please keep this civil. If it gets out of hand or if any mod deems it to be in poor taste I ask that it please be locked it.

--edited for the hard to please--

I would wish them a happy landing after I booted them out the door. Anyone wearing a swastika belongs in one place only, behind bars.

It's the responsibility of the candidate to look professional. I wouldn't feel bad for choosing the other candidates.

While I respect different religious beliefs and wouldn't mind a person having a tattoo religiously related.

The swastika to me represents something that is purely negative (all this even though that is not what the initial meaning behind a swastika is). So I would not hire them.

You're correct. But you assumed it was meant as a Nazi swastika as I intended it to be. I assume most users on this forum will be able to make the same assumption.

how would you not notice a swastika on someone's head?

After applying for the training they shaved their hair which revealed the tat.

Geeze how hard of a question is this 😕

This is true but the Hopi's used it as a symbol for the wandering tribes and the Navaho used it in healing ceremonies. In either case while it might be painted on, it would never be tatooed. Other peoples have used it as well going back even further.

The bottom line is that if it is tattoed on someones head, you can bet they're some flavor of Natzi and not a native American.

I wouldn't personally mind it however its the paying customers opinions that matter

even thought it isnt originally and evil symbol ppl still associated it with the holocaust and so i probly wouldnt hire that person

it depends on where on their head.

Good point. Can it be covered by hair or is it right smack dab on the forehead?

What the heck does it matter where it is on his head! The point is real people don't accept, tolerate and/or perpetuate the kind of evil that symbol represents. YOU know it's there, whether or not prospective customers can see it is beside the point.

Um, you realize that makes you no better than they are, right?

You can shun them, not hire them, refuse to serve them... but to jail someone for something you find offensive is oppresive.

Freedom is not measured by allowing that with which we agree, but that which offends us most.

To answer the question: No, I would not hire them. They would not be able to represent the image I want my company to project.
