Hyper 212 EVO fan clicking; replacement recommendation?

If it fits ok that will really solve the problem.

And quieter than most, have been using a NH-D14 for many years myself.

Just run mine vertical shooting up at the 200mm fan in the top of the old Antec 1200 , just had to move the fan from the front to the rear, it runs pull/pull basically with the others pulling from the side out to the rear.

The 200mm in the top is the only fan not modded in this old thing 😛. Is one of the originals, I guess they are up to V3 on those.

Yeah, it'll fit. The Arc Midi R2 has a lot of clearance. The motherboard (RAM placement specifically) was a bigger issue, which is why I chose the D15S over the D15.
 
So, I'm slightly disappointed. Even with this cooler, my i5 will still hit 90C very quickly in new versions of Prime95. Is it really that demanding? (Granted, on the EVO if just shut off after 10 seconds while this lasted 5 minutes.) Everything else runs 5-10C cooler though. I think I'm gonna need to buy that extra fan, though I'm limited to a 120mm fan.

10 seconds vs 5 minutes is a pretty big difference.

Every rig has limits, and many people tweak and dial them in over time.

90C is pretty common in things I have done in the past, if you are really stressing it.

Chips even vary from one to the other in the same iteration.

Some Q6600 SLCKR's were better than others.

I see... Well, I was only testing the cooler with this. Hopefully my 4790K that I get tomorrow doesn't disappoint. This cooler only has one fan, so I guess it's impressive once that's considered. I'm just going to avoid that test in the future though.

EDIT: Wait, I just realized that my fan controller was only set to 5V at the time...

So, I got the 4790k, and my coolest core is consistently 9C cooler than my hottest core. Should I reseat the cooler, or shout I wait to see is things change when the paste cures more?
 
My cores can get up to 9 degrees difference while running OCCT. Under standard loads, the difference is closer to 5. What temps are you getting? At 4.4 GHz OCCT will push cores 0-2 to 100 C on mine.

With a new cooler, I always reseat a few times, because I never get the best mount the first time. Goldilocks syndrome. ;-)

But, which cores? Is core 4 the coolest? It's on the coolest spot on the die. Could also be a marginal chip. The Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) accuracy is +/- 5C. This means there may be 10C between the highest and lowest cores, so your cpu is 1 degree away from out of Intel's spec.

So, I actually hadn't tried OCCT... and it crashed my system almost immediately at anything above 4.4GHz. Looks like this chip has literally 0 headroom above the max turbo speed. That makes me 4/4 CPU and GPU overclocking duds! And this one was probably the worst one lol. Oh well, still an improvement. 🙂

Yeah, core 4 was the coolest. With that considered, I guess it makes sense. All of the temps were relatively safe anyway, other than it hitting almost 90C in IBT (but no throttling or crashing). Didn't go above 80C in any other stress test I think; AIDA64 might have, but I don't remember.

is the Nh-D15S basically a regular nh-d15 but with a single fan?
 
2nd fan will give around 2-3 degree improvement. Case intake/exhaust airflow being equal.

Not that you really need it for 4.4 on a dud 4790k. Have you thought of de-lidding it? That could get you another 5-10 degrees, plus the inestimable satisfaction of hitting the dud chip with a hammer. ;-)

I think it can go higher if I can get it to 1.3V. And no, I will never delid or lap a CPU unless I win the lottery. I honestly think that the board is part of the problem anyway, since it seems that the shutoff in OCCT is caused by the voltage table.

I reapplied the thermal paste. Core #3 and core #0 now get around the same temp, and temps are in-line with what I see in reviews. I guess that issue's fixed!

You haven't replaced it yet?

Every time I get a cooler, PSU or a case I think, "this one is so awesome, I'll never need to replace it". Every time I do a build, I do. 😛
