Hyper 212 EVO fan clicking; replacement recommendation?

The fan has been clicking for about a year, but I only realized just now that it was the CPU fan and not a case fan... Anyway, are there any nice, quiet fans I could use without breaking the bank? It will be mounted vertically.

Decent static pressure 120mm cooler fan options:

Yate Loon D12SM-12 3-pin $3.95 - sleeve bearings. Good fan for the price. But sleeve bearings. And no PWM, so it won't idle as slowly as a PWM fan.

Quiet, decent performing fan: Arctic F12 PWM for $7.99 - FDB bearings, longer life. PWM speed control.

Rosewill's re-badge of the Akasa Apache at $14.99 - FDB bearing, good static pressure.

Phanteks PH-F120MP_BK for $14.99 - UFB bearing. Like Fluid dynamic bearing.

Premium level:

EK Vardar F4ER $19.95 - also available in black. Ball bearing, great static pressure.

Noctua NF-P12 at $18.99 - others may suggest the NF-F12, however, the P12 has a better air flow to noise ratio.

Can double up on the fans on the 212 running in Push/Pull. That arrangement offers quieter, cooler idle temps and a small drop in load temps.

Thanks. Now to decide how much I want to spend. With holidays coming up, that's a harder choice than you might think... Will any of these provide better cooling than the stock fan at load on their own?

I went with an NF-F12 for my Evo a long time ago, the noise levels are definitely a huge improvement over the stock experience. I don't remember how much temperatures changed, though.

I tried a handful of different brands before going Noctua (for both CPU- and case-cooling), but all of them were too loud, regardless of what reviewers said. I only use Noctuas now, and it's gonna stay that way.
They are quite expensive, but it's not like you need to replace them, ever. Paying $20 for a fan is nothing when it performs flawlessly for years.

In addition to all of ClockHound's suggestions:

I have an NF-A15 mounted on my CM Evo and I'm very pleased with it.

If you can find Scythe Gentle Typoons, I've seen reviews of the GT800 and GT1450 that have shocking good acoustic and thermal performance. The 800 is < 15dB at 1m at full speed, and the 1450 is ~20dB at full speed. In anything but an anechoic chamber or with your ear basically pressed to the case, both of those are likely to be inaudible.

Corsair's SP120 Quiet Edition's are pretty good too.

Nexus makes an excellent 120mm fan, the D12SL-12 (OEM'd by Yate Loon)

I've had cpu fans click because the plastic bracket that holds the fan to the cooler fins has too much free play. That's easy to fix with a shim.

How would this fix work, exactly?

I'm pretty sure that it's a bad bearing, though. It sometimes stops after a while and can be stopped by me knocking the case.

I run push pull on my evo and it works very well without a lot of noise even when running at max rpm's. My stock fan didn't last two months before it started clicking and the cost to rma it was prohibitive vs just getting a new fan locally.

The EK 120 F4ER will cool better since it spins up to 2200rpm. It's not quiet at the speed tho. However, will be very quiet at idle with the extended PWM range. Also consider the Darkside GT PWM 1850rpm fan - It's a Nidec GT with PWM control. Not cheap tho.

The Noctua A15 suggestion is a very good one as it's one of the best 140mm fans for flow vs noise and will cool better than stock. It's 140mm tho, so mounting will be a DIY ziptie affair. It's not a budget model tho.

If budget is the driving factor, next to the clicking, then the Yate or AC F12 are a great value for money. And you can delay the spendy upgrade for another year or so. Or you could just oil the stock fan for now. Not fun, but sleeve bearing fans need regular maintenance.

The NF-A15 is a peculiar fan, it is 140mm, but uses 120mm mounting holes, so it can be mounted with the Evo's standard mounting kit, no DIY required. I will certainly concur that it isn't a budget choice.

I personally put Arctic Cooling F12 fans on three different 212 Evo builds. I don't really notice the noise, but I wasn't focused on a silent build. They're relatively inexpensive and my temps remain reasonable.

I'm wondering if it might be worth it to just save up for a new cooler. My 4670K only gets up to 72C on the hottest core in Prime95 26.6 small FFTs @4.2GHz and 1.18V, But it seems to need quite a bit of voltage to get any higher than that. On top of that, I'm somewhat considering upgrading to a 4790K next year due to newer games and the fact that I stream on Twitch... Maybe I'll just buy the fan and see how it ends up working out?

Also, the clicking sometimes stops after it's on for a while.

Mine started clicking two years ago.I removed the Coolermaster sticker on the bearing side, put in one drop of Marvels mystery oil (it's what I had, any thin oil should work), and replace the sticker with a piece of electrical tape. Clean the area first so the tape will stick. It's been running silently ever since.

I didn't think it would last, so I did pick up one of these, but I haven't needed to install it yet:

That could be the best performance value.

The Thermalright TS 140 Rev A is $39.95 at Nan's - uses the 140mm TY-147a fan that is quiet and efficient. One of the best single tower cooler values - Tweaktown Review

At 47.95, the new Scythe Ninja 4 is very, very good. Overclockers review.

That Scythe looks amazing... too bad it won't fit over two of my sticks of RAM. :p Though, I'm planning on replacing those sticks anyway so everything matches (and yeas, I know getting different stick was a bad idea in the first place but I didn't have another option).

lol, ok.

First, when the computer is on, with the case cover off, and you lightly press your finger to the fan shroud or retention clip does it stop clicking?

How did you attach another fan on the Hyper 212 EVO, Puff?

want a ghetto way?

use zipties...

You will need a total of 8.
One of the zip ties, you will clip off all its tail off and leave the head only.
Then slide the other zip complete ziptie though the fan mount hole, though the sink, to the other fan mount hole, and then use the head from the one you cut to clamp it together.

:D

So, I forgot about this thread... lol.

It seems to only happen at lower RPMs. I'm honestly thinking about just saving up for a new cooler since I want to see if I can push this CPU harder anyway and a good cooler will last me for life.

So, I went ahead and bought an NH-D15S, arriving today. Is it it overkill? Definitely. However, that also means that I won't ever need to replace it no matter what CPU I get in the future. :)
