Epic hype. Thats all it is and people are catching on. Since Catrina, people play it so damn safe, that its nothing more than crying wolf to the extreme just so noone can say that they weren't warned. The reports on the storm will evaporate faster than the light showers that it produces.

Very ignorant comments. The storm is just barely starting and already Atlantic City is underwater.

Wait until Wednesday to decide if this was "overhyped".

My bet is that people are going to die because they agree with that opinion. This is a nasty storm and if you're in an area that's being impacted by it, including far inland, you're an idiot if you don't prepare.
I'm a small government conservative, but this is an example of what the federal government does and needs to do in our society to help keep citizens safe. They inform the media of dangerous situations and the media gets the word out to the people.

Think of the bloody murder people would scream if no preparative actions were taken and shit hit the fan. These are the same people that complain about this being a nothing storm.

I agree people need to prepare to be on the safe side, but what I am talking about is the media is really blowing this thing up like crazy. They are making comparisons to storms in movies, calling this a perfect storm and they say it will be "the largest in recorded history" and "catastrophic". It will be a run of the mill storm that people on the east coast have seen endless times before.

i dunno brah

I imagine the OP alone by himself all boarded up and hunkered down in his one story single walled wood framed house located on a lonely stretch of coastline directly in the predicted path of the hurricane repeating to himself over and over again what he posted. ;)

Given the area that it covers and the amount of potential damage that exists; it is dangeroius.

Because it is not hitting an area acquainted with sotrms of this magnituted; people are not as prepared.

It is also affecting close to 1/4 of the nations population.
With the trees still ahving leaves; the ability for power lines down increases.
A wet fall increases the potential of flooding.

I have been through hurricanes (Cat 4,5) yet still respect the potential for damage that this can do. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

this is a big monster and moving slowly with ideal conditions. Not to be taken lightly by one who is affected. those that are making fun of it are fools.

You can look at what one of the top experts in the United States has to say about it.

The problem with a storm like this is the topography of area that its hitting. Unlike say Florida or Texas, there are a lot of mountains and hills and valleys. The torrential rains fly down brooks and creeks and flood valleys. The water then breaks over the banks (and blows off manhole covers) and goes all over the place. There is also a lot of coastal area. The lower Hudson Valley above NYC usually has around a 4 foot high tide. With the full moon, hightide, storm surge and rain run-off together there can easily be another 6-8 feet. In many places the shoulders of the Hudson are only a foot or two from high water level. Waterfronts, railroads etc will all be under significant amounts of water. West Point's heliport will be substantially submerged. The high winds are not what will do most of the damage although a lot of trees will go down.

He could, but he probably won't.

If anything, right now I am worried this could end up being worse than some people thought it would. I'm already reading reports of people seeing flooding of the sort not experienced in decades.

They expect it to stall once it hits land and dump tons of rain from what I've read.

Lol, for a good full minute or so I thought moonbogg and monovillage were one and the same poster, due to their name similarity, and my head nearly assploded. :p

From another forum:

My grandma just had to be rescued/evacuated from Lindenhurst, NY south of Montauk Highway by my dad. I don't think they had mandatory evacs. (not 100% sure), but water which has never in 60 years gotten up to the house was 2-3 feet around the house!!!!!!

Its badness (no matter how big, or little) will be amplified by the fact the US media is concentrated in that small part of the world.

Do you know what that means? It just means it's a hybrid storm. A warm gulf hurricane colliding with a cold "nor'easter". It's essentially the same thing that happened in 1991 only this time it's going to make land fall and hurricane Sandy is much much bigger than hurricane Grace.

President will look presidential, Romney will do something dumb to inject his name into the story. Something like donate his tour bus, naw that would be too silly.

I guess it will be one more real story to bury the right wing non-story of Beng..Ben.... I forgot already.

Non event?

United States has many Hurricane strikes... the worst damage is from storm surge off the ocean. We'll see what the tide brings to coastal towns, and NYC specifically.

He probably doesn't realize that that movie was based on a real event. :D

"Say anything to get elected" Mittens disagrees with you. If you're a small government conservative, what does that make him? I'm going with "craven opportunist" and "tool." ;)

"Including disaster relief, though?" debate moderator John King asked Romney.

His response:

We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all.

The issue is that in addition to the hurricane there are other fronts that the hurricane will run into that will cause serious issues and impact 50-60 million people. A category 1 hurricane by itself can still wreak a lot of havoc... just like the one that pummeled the outer banks last year. This time of year hurricanes that far north are usually pulled off shore... not so much this time.
