Hurricane Katrina a Category 5 Hurricane!

Having lived in Biloxi I can tell you I would have never guessed they took this storm lightly after the way they talked about Camille. Many people there are poor enough to have had to stick it out. Lots of old landmarks there are gone. The Edgewater strip mall with the crappy movie theater you could order a few beers at is wiped out. Some big name Casinos are wiped out. A historic buildings that survied Camille are gone.

I always though it was entierly plausible that a big storm surge could sweep the city into the Back Bay. The high water mark for the city itself on the peninsula is the railroad tracks. Everything behind it was safe from Camille. Not this time. Keesler AFB seems ok (behind the tracks) but its not in its usual position to help the community this time. Its barely self sustaining from what I hear until outside units can come in.

I've updated the main post with more donation links and plenty of streaming video links.

Thanks conjur!

Is it me, or is WWL broadcasting from Baton Rouge again(i.e. the studio looks like the BR studio, not the NO studio)? And why would they be doing that?

because the NO studio began to flood iirc

Has anyone tried to reach Aaron as of late? Hope he made it....
Texted him a couple of hours ago. No response, but I'm not getting any response from a lot of 504 cell numbers that are out of the city.

This is really creepy(and crappy) - everyone thought Katrina would pass over NO and immediately obliterate it; instead we get to watch it slowly sink, perhaps the only way the situation could be worse.

As new video feeds come out, could someone post a mirror like this... I can't stream from work. But links like this I can download to my computer and then play... I'd much appreciate Metairie and Slidell area reports. Thanks Very Much - it's very hard being away with friends/family there without being able to contact them.

Just FYI - The Red Cross is re-certifying Tammy (my wife to be) and sending her down ASAP. She's also a lab person, and worked Andrew years ago.

A couple of photos of Slidell

This Indian dude has a very abrasive voice, but interesting information none the less.

Here's that website

DISCLAIMER:
The LSU hurricane surge models are produced for research, educational and
information purposes only. These model outputs are not meant to be used for
planning. For evacuation and similar information contact your local emergency
management officials.

INFORMATION ON LSU MODEL OUTPUTS:
These surge outputs are produced using a modified version of the ADCIRC
hydrodynamic code. Depicted is the maximum elevation of the storm surge,
in feet about mean sea level. The water elevations shown reflect only the
rise in level associated with the surge generated by the tropical cyclone;
they do not include water level variations from mean sea level because
of local meteorological conditions not associated with the tropical cyclone
(i.e. setup at a coast due to local sea breezes), and do not include local rise
in the storm tide because of large wind-generated waves. Normal astronomical
tides are included in the surge outputs. The user, in trying to assess the potential
surge in their area of interest, must take into account all local meteorological
effects, which could significantly increase surge elevations.

NUMBERING SYSTEM:
A run designated by a number, i.e., # 16 means that the track and storm
characteristics were based on the National Hurricane Center's Advisory of that
number. A number such as 16 W means that we have created a track, using the
National Hurricane Center's Advisory 16 for size, strength, and forward speed of
the tropical cyclone being modeled, BUT we have placed the track along the
western edge of the Track Advisory Cone of Uncertainty. Because of the dire
consequences of a major hurricane striking New Orleans, we will occasionally
run tracks along the edge of the NHC cone of track uncertainty, to see if New
Orleans could be flooded, should the storm take this path. For more information see
www.hurricane.lsu.edu,, www.publichealth.hurricane.lsu.edu, and www.nd.edu/~adcirc/.
Very slow in loading...getting hammered.

They're going to be without food, water, supplies for a very long time. I'd have been looting, too.

Yeah, it's not like they're carrying out plasma TVs or anything. They're getting necessities. What are they supposed to do? Sit around and wait for the cashier?

Pic of 2nd levee break I believe that's in eastern Orleans parish.

CNN reporting a man jumped to his death inside the Superdome. There have been 2 deaths total reported IN the Superdome. No word on the 2nd. Toilets are backing up, still no a/c, people are "miserable".

Superdome surrounded by a "moat".

Flood water in New Orleans is tainted with gasoline, chemicals, and, get this, floating islands of ants! (can't remember if it was fire or red ants)

Do they really think they can sandbag the break, or is this a "last resort" measure?:Q
