Humanitarian Bowl - Blue field, empty seats

There are too many bowls

BOISE - The match up is different every year but to Humanitarian Bowl organizers one thing remains the same: making money.

So what can Boise expect with this year's H-bowl game?

This year the Boise State Broncos are headed to sunny San Diego, leaving the Humanitarian Bowl orange-less again. But BSU ticket agents say don't let the lack of lines fool you. They say their phones have been ringing off the hook, not only for Poinsettia Bowl seats, but also for the H-Bowl match up.

"Now that we know its Nevada and Maryland people are excited about that match up," said Anita Guerricabeitia, assistant director for ticket sales.

Humanitarian Bowl officials admit they wanted BSU to stay and play on the blue turf.

"Of course it's a big boost to us on the revenue side when we have Boise State because we basically sell every seat in the stadium," said Kevin McDonald, Executive Director for the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl.

Last year 26,000 people braved the December cold to watch the game. While some fans made the trek to Boise McDonald says they rely on locals to help fill the seats.

"The success of this bowl is really based on travel not coming from the ACC, we like the fact we get a marque name coming from the ACC."

"It has a real positive impact whether it's locals or whether it's out of town folks," said Bobbie Patterson, Executive Director for the Boise Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Patterson says on average a visitor spends about $240 a day when they come to the city. With the H-Bowl a week after the Poinsettia Bowl this year the hope is those BSU fans who made the trip to California will be back to help out come December 30th.

"It generates enthusiastic spending," said Patterson.

As of Monday afternoon the University of Maryland says it's sold about 16 tickets to the game. The University of Nevada says it's sold 8 so far.

I stopped going to bowls after they added the other BCS games. Unless it's my favorite team within a 4 hour drive, I'm not going. Bowls are all just a money-making scam now. They should call the next one the "Take Your Money" Bowl. Because when all you need is 5 wins to make a bowl, wth is the point?

At the time the author wrote the article, the schools had sold 24 tickets between them. Typically that bowl draws a lot of Boise State fans since they are local. Those tickets won't be purchased through Maryland or Nevada's ticket offices, rather they'll be purchased directly from the bowl organizers.

So your topic summary is very misleading

I'm sorry, but anyway you spin it, selling only 24 tickets from the ticket allotment given to the schools is downright embarrassing.

The Humanitarian Bowl typically draws a lot of BSU fans when BSU plays in the bowl. Let's see how they do without BSU there.

The game is in Idaho. In December. Large #'s of traveling fans are not expected. This bowl relies on local ticket sales, any fans traveling from far away are a bonus. When Boise State is in the bowl, they sell out. In years like this they hope to have a good enough match up to still draw lots of local fans.

I agree that there are too many bowls but this is a poor example to use, imo.

If I weren't "2,373 mi ? about 1 day 11 hours" away I would consider going. I'm a die hard maryland fan (class of '03) but it's just too far away.

I think bowl organizers need to think things through more when they choose the teams for their bowl. The should choose teams that are closer to the place where the game is going to be played to attract fans of both teams.

You need 6 wins to become 'bowl eligible', but even that is too low of a number.

Way too many bowls, with the vast majority having match-ups no one but the team's fans care about. Even then, I don't think most care.

College football is so anti-climatic nowadays. A pretty fun and exciting regular season, followed up by a ridiculously long wait for terrible, boring games.

You need a winning or even record to make a bowl game. So you technically need 6 wins to make a bowl.

Money has ruined college football. They should have the BCS Bowl games and no more. I'll take it a step even further and say there should be no BCS Bowl games at all but a playoff format with the top 16 teams.

I think that half of the Division 1-A teams make it to bowls now. I always did want to go to one though. Almost went to the Capital One Bowl last year.

Every body and thier brother though getting a bowl game for their city would be a great money maker. So that is why there are 10,000 bowl games. But it seems they only make money if the team travels about 4-7 hour drive to a bowl game.

Nashville has the Music City Bowl... featuring the 6-6 Vandy Commodores. The bowl will lose money this year because the majority of people seeing the game will be from Nashville. Last year it hosted Kentucky and they did a little better. A lot more hotel rooms got sold.

So less than 4 hours no one stays. More than 7 hours... well who wants to drive that far to see a 6-6 team play. I doubt there will be too many Boston College fans coming in for the music city bowl.

Wow, could your topic be any more misleading?

" 24 tickets sold for bowl so far" That's absolute bullshit.

16+8=24.

No, too many friggin bowl games.

Not too many. Just ones in completely uncompelling locations for the time of the year and for teams that really don't have the fan base of big time football schools.

Seriously, how many people want to travel 1000-2000 miles to Idaha in December? By the looks of things it's about 2 dozen.

Compare that to a school like Iowa that has a huge following and landed an Outback Bowl bid in Tampa. A few years ago Iowa brought along close to 60,000 fans and easily eclipsed the home field crowd of Florida fans.

It's a vacation for fans from those states and they get to watch their team play one more game for the year.

Boise native here - I usually go to the bowl game, but am debating on it since I could care less for Nevada. Although I bleed blue & orange, I proudly rooted for Fresno last year - although it was friggen cooooold!

Also, this is the last year that ACC will be sending a team to the H-Bowl. Next year, MWC will be sending a team (1 year contract).

That's the school allotted tickets sold only. Do you not understand they sell to the public and ticket brokers also? That is not the total number of tickets sold. Your title is VERY misleading.

Would you take a double dose of chill pills if he added "school allotted tickets" to the title?

The title is not at all misleading. The topic summary is misleading though. Hey, if you are going to nitpick over stupid things, then I will too.

It's not stupid when people click the thread thinking "wow, they've only sold 26 seats", and you realize the OP doesn't know how to word his topic summary and it's not correct.
