Hulu Plus Coming to PS3 and Xbox 360

Hulu finally announced it's long-rumored subscription based service called Hulu Plus.

On the Hulu Plus page, under More Devices it lists PS3 as "Coming Soon" and Xbox 360 as "Coming 2011."

For now Hulu Plus appears to offer entire seasons for a variety of current ABC, NBC and FOX shows as well as the entire back catalog of many shows from these networks' pasts.

The service is currently invite only and $9.99/month as rumored.

According to Joystiq, the Xbox 360 Hulu Plus app will be restricted to XBL Gold members only, to no one's surprise.

Unsurprisingly, MS says Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 will be restricted to XBL Gold Members (via Joystiq).

Quote from Microsoft:

The entertainment options on Xbox 360 continue to grow. Today, Hulu announced that its new subscription service, Hulu Plus, will be available on Xbox 360.

We're incredibly excited to bring Hulu Plus and its amazing library of entertainment to Xbox LIVE. Hulu Plus joins our ever-expanding entertainment offerings on Xbox 360, which currently includes Netflix, Last.fm and Zune Video. Starting this November, Xbox 360 will also be the only console to deliver 3500 live sporting events from ESPN3.com.

Like ESPN, Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 will take advantage of the social connectivity possible with our 25 million member Xbox LIVE community as well as the magic of Kinect for Xbox 360. We are committed to delivering signature features to the Hulu Plus experience on Xbox 360, like controller-free navigation with Kinect and Xbox LIVE Parties so you can watch with friends no matter where they are. These are custom entertainment experiences for Xbox 360 that you can't find anywhere else. More details will be announced at a later time.

There are a lot of wishful (crazy) people on the internet wishing that it will be included (sans fee) with Playstation Plus. I'm willing to bet it will be like Netflix or Facebook and available to all PS3 users for no additional cost (besides the Hulu Plus fee).

ArsTechnica's article confirms that even though you pay, you still get ads. They don't mention either way but I'd guess you also still get the 2 logo bugs (Hulu + network) covering parts of the screen.

Netflix streaming: ad-free, no logos.

Oh cry about it a little more why don't you... you also pay for cable but you still see commercials. How's this any different?

Actually I don't pay for cable. I occasionally watch a show on Hulu (House if you must know). And the only reason I tolerate the ads is because it keeps it free. When I am paying for the service, I don't see any reason to watch ads; and therefore, I will not.

Like a lot of other people, I really can't see myself buying this. If the list on Kotaku is correct it seems to only be content from the major networks... which you can get for free OTA or off their websites after the first airing anyway. None of the cable channels I watch regularly and, of course, live sports will surely be missing. Old seasons would be the primary driver for me and I can already get most of that through Netflix... plus all their movies.

The subscription service is basically to pay for the entire catalog of shows that they have.

Remember, Netflix's catalog of movies and TV Shows sucked at first too. Hulu will eventually grow.

I'd just like to write Microsoft a letter that says, "Dear Microsoft, go ahead and give us basic access to Hulu now. You can add all the Avatar, Community, and Party extras later."

I'm betting that it will be like XBL. PS+ subscription plus Hulu Plus subscription. I don't think it is any coincidence that news about this broke after Sony revealed the PS+ subscription plan.

Netflix didn't have a huge streaming catalog when I had it, but I also didn't get ads. Not to mention they offered disc shipping as well for that service. I just find it unacceptable to pay for a service with ads that is marginally better than a free service with ads.

For me, this just doesn't equate to a service I'd pay for.

Also, I think a lot of the these services that are available for the free PSN accounts will migrate to PSN+. Sony sees Microsoft raking in money for this and I'm sure they'll want to get in on it.

I called it (and a bunch of other people too). Hulu Plus will require a Playstation Plus subscription

Yay for Playon.

PlayOn is now $39.99 a year for the first year and $19.99 a year for following years. Granted that is cheaper than $9.99 a month but Hulu is also going to start restricting their catalog for free viewers (ie you won't be able to see all episodes for every season).

I suppose that makes sense and is no different than what MS does with XBL but it's one less bullet point for Sony to have against XBL Gold. It's also one more thing for people to complain about regarding PS+ since, like XBL Gold, you'll have to pay for both PS+ and Hulu Plus (but those people are crazy anyway).

And in my experience PlayOn sucks, though it's been a while since I last used it. I'd imagine the interface will pale in comparison to the official Hulu Plus apps.

Yeah, it's inevitable. Sony will now get a taste of the complaints that Microsoft has received over the services they've added to Xbox LIVE Gold.

PlayOn is...sufficient given no other alternative. I got it on sale for $19.99 when it was just the application and not a subscription like it is now. It does the job but isn't pretty.

PlayOn offers streaming for other services but that seems to continually be narrowing.

I almost picked it up when it was on sale but, spartan interface aside, I could rarely get it to work during the few trials I had.

Yeah there is plenty to be annoyed with when I play it. If I accidentally hit rewind or fast forward then it won't restart the video back up forcing me to start over from the beginning. Sometimes it takes multiple tries to get videos to start. Sometimes I have to restart the PlayOn app.

I don't know how many of these problems are because of PlayOn or because of my aging PC. But, I only tolerate it because there is no other viable option.
