My phone can play a 1080p mkv on a Hotel TV via HDMI all day. Sure beats $10 rental movies.

Yeah, my phone is my HTPC when I'm at a TV, and it's my media watcher when I'm on the go. Watching videos on the iPhone is not at all enjoyable, too small.

Instead of killing time playing flash games aka angry birds, I read a book or watch a TV episode.

Yah. I say watching movies on the phone is a "band-aid" solution, even if you use a secondary display. I'm trying to use the term "band-aid" in a positive point of view here. Like when you don't have a big screen or WiFi nearby, but want to check out quick Internet video or want to kill time for a short period of time. I mean, it is not too practical to watch series of movies on a phone. Screen is still small, battery runs out fast, you may get phone calls or text, etc. Video is decisively a secondary function of a phone for me.

High-quality 1080p/H.264 rips (read: from the "scene") are 10 Mbps+, and easily over 10 GB for a 1 hour footage. More reasonable quality that iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, etc,. sell is 3~5 Mbps, and still going to be ~2 GB for an hour. It's unrealistic to use a phone for your media library.

My current set up is to use a 8 GB Nexus 4 acting as a phone/modem/email and other real-time stuff while using a 32 GB Nexus 7 with Stickmount for consumption and app testing. With T-Mobile's $30 unlimited plan (HSPA up to 5 GB) serving both the Nexus 4 and 7 via N4's native tethering, I am enjoying my setup immensely.

My next step/goal is cloud storage. I am looking into a personal solution instead of relying on 3rd parties. Not sure whether it's possible or is within my capability, but it is going to be fun.

My Atrix 2 is powerful enough I would use it for my TV, if I could find a reasonably priced dock that would work well.
Never did find the laptop adapter thing (kept getting units that only worked for Atrix 1).

Same for Note 2, if there was a quick n easy dock, I would be happy to use it in place of my stupid Logitech Revue.

The Verges review on the HTC One came in. Battery life is bad.
After using a GNex on VZW, I'm sick of justifying battery issues.

the verge has nothing but the reviewer saying 'i used it for a day and battery life is bad.' no real test.

Why? My next phone will have a 1080p screen, just like my files. It's a perfect fit.

I really hope the SGS4 keeps a MicroSD slot because I will have a full 128gb card in there eventually if it does. 64gb would barely be enough.

If HTC wants to impress me, release the first big 128gb phone. Apple is finally breaking that barrier and you bought Beats. You could be THE wanna be DJ phone for Android. I have some friends that would be buried with their old 128gb iPods because their iPhones are too small.

Indeed, it's wonderful that our phones can work as our media library/player.

microsd cards are cheap and huge and take up no space at all in my pockets. There's no reason to not use my phone as such and it's a bloody shame that it's gone from so many phone especially in a time when all the carriers are trying to avoid unlimited data.

I think you are bad at math: 10Mbps * 60 sec/min * 60 min = 4.5GB. Average scene release for 2hr movie is 8-9GB. My proof: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=10+Mbps+*+60+sec/min+*+60+min

This just... sigh.

Certainly can't keep my movie library on my 64GB SD card, but I do like being able to copy over a half dozen or so HD movies straight from my HTPC 15 minutes before I head out. No converting, lower res copies just for my phone, etc. Next week I delete and repeat.

You know, the newly released HTC One changes my view of HTC phones. It's a great phone.

Hence my qualified statement "band-aid in a positive sense" I definitely see usage scenarios as yours and I see it as a positive, not a negative. I just wanted to emphasize that phones can't replace real storage solutions. Which should be a common sense, but there is this person here who is begrudged on just about everything and can't seem to stand that others are having fun/satisfactory experiences with their smart phones - pervert, I know, but this is an (semi-)public forum, so the 1st amendment principle applies.. ^^

Chill out people, since when is it a crime to disagree with complaints of "lack of SD cards"? I don't need SD cards and I am happy about it. If you want to keep 20,000 songs in your pocket 24/7, then more power to you.

Fact is, it will never be enough storage. If they give you 64gig, it will not be enough because you can buy a 128gig SD card...you get the idea.

Thing is though you don't have to use the Sdcard slot if you don't want to.

I'm not sure what the downside is to having one.

The Verge's battery life test is nothing but subjective analysis.
There is no comparison to any other phones whatsoever, no figures for WiFi, 3G/LTE, talk time, video playback, etc...

i don't understand how we keep using subjective battery tests and blog-like reviews now as a comparison point.

I know Engadget's gone downhill since the departure of Josh et. al, but one thing they've done right is to start objective battery tests. Now at least we can compare battery life with numbers with their rundown test at least.

I've found them to be way more useful for actually figuring out how a phone would last in a typical day. AT's testing methodology is not useful to me because it does not reflect what I experienced in real world usage.

The Verge review doesn't provide very much detail:

"In more practical use, you’re going to want a charger nearby, since I killed the battery with about ten hours of tweeting, browsing, emailing, and not that much else. This is an unpleasant, sadly unremarkable side effect of big screens and fast phones, but’s a shame nonetheless."

No numbers on how much tweeting, browsing, emailing or screen time.

And on the flipside AT provides a whole lot of detail but their rankings don't reflect what I personally have seen and experienced. I'll take vague over incorrect.

Not to mention we are still waiting on numbers from the Android flagships that are known to have great battery life...
