Just got my phone from someone who went to I/O. Traded him straight up for my T-Mobile N1, which works in his home country in Europe.

It's as good as everyone says it is. Tons of garbage apps though.

That's awesome that you got one early, unlocked, for the N1 straight up. Where do you live and do you have 4G covg that you can comment on?

wow, finally got my hands on an HD2 today. that thing is HUGE. I think I'll stick w/ my Pre a little longer. Gotta stop buying stuff I don't need =) I'm going to hold out to see what HP can do w/ Palm. Or wait for the EVO in the body of a Nexus One (size wise).

luckily, my camera gear survived after a fanatical detail job on the camera to insure every single grain of sand have been removed!

So thank goodness! Anyways, my phone is gone... I have to get a new phone... so I guess the EVO 4G... but the main problem is that i'm not so certain how proven is android OS is... WebOS never crashed on me, never gave me any issues from day one... it is the most stable OS i've used (Win Mobo 6, PalmOS) I hope it also lives up to webOS's stability!

Which is interesting as many people have had tons of problems with WebOS. I've had friends with the Pre and it's crashed and when I had a Pre it crashed a couple times but the bugs with WebOS were mainly due to the crappy hardware. WebOS is a great OS but Android has matured very quickly and is very stable. The only things that crash are some of the more poorly made apps or extra things you install on your phone.

Hrm, I'd say the bugs w/ WebOS is memory management. Most of my issues were not being able to launch apps when nothing was open. I had to reboot (which is another problem... something like 2 minutes to reboot the damn phone). I've had a handful of hard crashes, usually because of the camera app.

But I won't argue it needs better hardware still, heh

Ever since I installed the 800Mhz patch, strangely enough I haven't encountered any "too many cards" errors. I was getting them all the damn time even with only 1 or 2 apps running before I installed it.

I love my heavily patched webOS which is a result of a lot of work from the homebrew and patching community. IMO the OS would be even more half-baked than it already feels and much less appealing without those guys and gals releasing all sorts of patches to fix things that Palm could have easily implemented as options and speed the thing up. I went back to default speeds while trying out different 800Mhz options and the OS just feels slow and broken that way.

If HPalm releases better hardware and new versions of the OS that don't feel like they've been taken out of the oven too early a year from now, I'd gladly go back. Till then, it's EVO time as of 6/4.

They said it's coming to LA later this year. Places like New York and LA should be some of the first ones to get things like this but they never are.

It actually makes more sense to begin the roll out of new network technology in a smaller market to work out the bugs before you go big time in LA and NYC. I think it's unlikely that LA and NYC will not have 4G by the end of January and probably earlier.

i took the "just started typing to get answers" for granted way too much.. with the Centro, it's pain-staking awful. How does one live like this?? haha I know I have, for a couple of years... it was horrible!

You guys are doing a bad job of keeping me from pre-ordering this evening. My touch diamond has been super flaky lately. WM6 freezing, opera crashing or not loading, answer buttons not working when I get calls, had to pull battery out maybe 10 times this week. Plus, ATT's service has been god awful lately. Middle of downtown Tulsa, in a one story non-brick building and getting 0-1 bars of 3g

Will they charge me today or when I pick it up? Prolly going to BB

Thats interesting because theres a quote from an HTC rep posted on the andriod forums that the Evo will not be in Europe.

Strange.

What carrier carries it?

Not sure about Best Buy, but I know Radio Shack just requires $50 down. Then you just pay the rest when you pick it up.

Yeah, those are big media markets and any problem(s) will be amplified by all the media companies and big wigs.

I came from a T-Mo nexus one so playing with it for two days now, some more observations/comparisons -

HTC Sense is nice, but sometimes I wish for the stock Android. You can't disable it (those sites showing stock Android is basically just a theme, not really disabling sense). Example - the gallery connects to Flickr and there's no way to change it to Picasa. Having all of my photos from Picasa available on the phone was really nice.

You also cannot uninstall alot of programs like Sprint NASCAR.

The value in the ability to install any updates from Google on the N1 has gotten much higher for me now that I've been forced to use Sense and not able to change anything. Not to say sense isn't good (the clock is awesome), but still, I'd like the choice.

The notification light is ABSURDLY small. It's in the speaker of the phone that you put your ear to:

evonotification.jpg

If you can see that little spot I pointed at, that's the notification light. Compared to the nexus one trackball it's ridiculous. It blinks and doesn't breath like the trackball either. And the trackball can also be set to be different colors for different notifications on the N1 (if you root). This is probably my biggest peeve with the EVO and it really makes me want my N1 again.

The trackball also makes it alot easier to play certain games (like Frozen Bubble).

The larger screen makes software keyboard much more friendly. In the past, regardless of how good the software keyboard is on any phone (iPhone included), it was never as good as a nice hardware one for me. It was the same with the Nexus One. The bigger screen on the EVO makes it about even for me whether to prefer a software or hardware keyboard now.

The softkeys at the bottom are much, much better than the N1. N1 you had to use the top half of the key, the EVO works as it should.

Camera is alot better, when you push the take photo button the snap is almost instant. But having to use the screen to take a photo is not that great (trackball sadness once again).

Video is just slightly better (but still not great).

Not sure if there is anything else anyone would like to know. Sprint TV and Youtube and all that all work fine/look good.

Edit: Battery life is better than the N1 for me. Use it casually throughout the day and has lasted all day.

In the end, if there was a Nexus One on Sprint would I still pick the EVO? I'm not sure right now. The ability to get 2.2 and to do whatever I want with the Nexus One, along with the trackball, makes it very compelling for me personally. Unfortunately I was forced to switch because T-Mo sucks so badly for me.

Well that good. I'm originally from NY but live in Salt Lake City now and we are also getting 4G service by the end of the summer -- at least according to the press release I saw a few weeks back. I would doubt LA would be much later but then again LA is much more spread put so it might be.
