HTC Evo 4G review

Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. But the fact remains that it's still very much an Android device -- which means that if you don't like Android now, odds are good that even Android executed on the most amazing hardware to date won't do much to change your opinion of it. You've also got to be concerned about upgradeability; Froyo is almost certainly around the corner now, and HTC hasn't done anything to suggest it's able to push Sense-powered updates in a timely fashion.

That said, this is truly one of the best smartphones ever made, and even spotty 4G -- a reality of a young technology that's going to take years to properly build out -- probably won't do much to hamper your enjoyment of this thing. It's reasonable to assume that phones like the EVO will ultimately come to every carrier over the next few months... but hey, if you jumped ship for Sprint to pick up this monster, we wouldn't be able blame you.

Sounds like an awesome phone.

haha I was just about to post that here.

Looks like a pretty slick device, although I personally think it is too large for a phone for my taste. I was surprised that it is just an LCD screen, I thought it was AMOLED. The comparison shot with the Nexus AMOLED made it appear as though they are both of equal quality, so it is nice that you don't lose a lot but gain the ability to use the screen outside.

It really sucks when I go to Disneyland and try to use my Samsung Moment AMOLED screen outside while waiting in a line. It's a bitch to read.

The girlfriend and I are preordering ours this weekend. Can't wait. Seems like an excellent phone.

Man, now I really can't wait. I already preordered, so June 4 just needs to come!

That's right, I forgot it isn't out until the first week in June. Perhaps I am nuts, but isn't this unusually early for a tech site to get a legit review done? I seem to remember that the sites usually get a 3 day or so window, not a 14+ day scoop. Maybe I am wrong...

Sprint has a lot riding on their 4G rollout, they're going to get review units out ASAP & to everyone that they can...

Yea I guess that does make sense. Especially if that is the same week as WWDC, they probably are wisely trying to beat the fervor that will inevitably accompany that event.

I just really think that they are dumb for releasing it so close to the new iPhone announcement. I think it should have been released this month to get a head-start.

Yea, I would guess that if they could have, they would have done so. Given that the review mentions the video-chat/conference program wasn't even ready, it seems that HTC/Sprint are scrambling as is.

The upgradeability issue is really the only major point that is preventing me from pre-ordering. I mean, how long is it going to be until Sense phones get 2.2? Months? It took several months for phones to get 2.1 I don't want to wait months for the supposed speed advantages that 2.2 brings.

I'm really not liking that the only way to turn the screen on is by pushing the power button. That's one thing about my Droid that drives me crazy. I wish pushing the home button activated the screen.

Unless you've used a snapdragon processor on 2.1 and found it to be too slow, I wouldn't let that hold you back, it's pretty brisk. The supposed speed increases are just benchmarks, and 2.2 will eventually come out for it.

So funny Walt shits on battery while Chris praises it. I'm going with Chris. Walt is kind of old...and he's an Apply fanboi.

I don't want to imply that hacking is or should be necessary, but the hacking community for Android is a major advantage IMO. The EVO is going to be a popular phone and I bet there will be a lot of people working on providing updates ahead of schedule even if HTC is slow. Android 2.1 was available for Sprint's other Android phones over a month ahead of the official release, and even before that you had a lot of customization options through custom ROMs.
