Alright, as some of you may have seen in a previous post...I had to go out and by a new HSF, because mine went bad. I ended up buying a Coolermaster DP5-6I31C from a computer place by campus and just got home. I decided to install it, and guess what, the damn heat sink is too big to fit on the damn chip. It's not like I bought the wrong kind...it's the motherboard's power converter (Copper wrapped loop thingy)...it gets in the way to the point that I can't properly seat the heatsink. Comparing the new one to the old one, I noticed that the new one is about 10mm wider on each side of the fan... Am I sol on this one...should I just order one of the internet?

Damn MSI

You need to buy one that will fit properly. Many larger heatsinks don't fit on a lot of boards. Unless you know a specific one fits on your board, your best bet would be to get one that is the size of the socket - something like an SK6 will fit on anything.

Here's an question. Can I just take off the fan on and put it on the old heatsink?

If it fits, that's would be a perfect solution!

Good, it does...and I got some Arctic Silver...so I'm set. Thx guys, and I'll give you an update when the comp is (fingers crossed) up and running.

if you take the fan off and put it on the old heatsink you're wasting your money. Just buy a new fan

Well guess what, it doesn't matter anyway ...that wasn't the problem. My initial problem was that my machine went into a "spontaneous reboot" - like series of events, but when it came back on, I got no video. I let it sit for a while...and it came back on, but the fan was busted. So...I figured it had overheated because of the bad fan and shut itself off. Well...even with a new one working properly...after the computer boots (After about 2 min) it goes into the spontaneous reboot again. My guess is that is something with the mobo, but I can't be sure...and regardless, I don't have the time to deal with it. Right now I'm on my "backup" system...which is faster anyway, so I'll just move the hard drive for now...and work on the comp later. Thx anyway guys...
