HS good enough for Geforce3 Ti200?

While I like my Gainward 450 Geforce3 Ti200 the 30db fan is a little loud and only pushes 2.9CFM.

As I'm not really interested in overclocking (very happy with speed of games) I'm looking to quiet down that card by going with a passive heat sink.

I know it is possible to cool the Geforce3 Ti200 passively as Dell OEM cards have a passive heat sink.

Foraging around the web revealed a lot of Active HSF's for VGA cards like the blue and crystal orbs but few passive heat sinks specificaly for VGA.

Well it does not have to be specific for VGA but I do need one that has a fairly low profile and has adequate cooling for the nvidia GPU.

One possible canidate is the Alpha W45x10W which can be had from KD Computers for only $5

So the question for you bright boys and gals:

Is a 45x45x10mm Heat sink enough to cool a non-overclocked gainward GeForce3 Ti200???????

Your kidding right. Your stock video card fan is to loud? Well, good luck, I just find it hard to beleive it can be to loud pushing 2.9cfm. Do you have any case fans?

that was a rhetorical question BTW. ;)

Stock video card fan is 30db and only pushes 2.9CFM

No I have no case fans just the panaflo in my modded PSU and my panaflo on my Duron

If my math is right that lil fan is as loud as both my panaflo's combined (6db=double the sound right?)

So yeah getting rid of my video card fan should help quiet my PC down

I just have no idea if a 45x45x10mm heatsink is the right size for a Geforce3 Ti200 GPU.

Basicaly I am trying to change my gainward that looks like this pict

Into a passively cooled card like this Dell OEM Geforce3 Ti200

I once read an article about a guy who modded his DragonOrb so it would fit his Ti200, the heatsink of the DragonOrb was enough to allow him to oc it to 240Mhz. It takes up 3 pci-slots though.

Hey there buddy!
Listen, I have the same problem. I'm using an enermax whipsper power supply and a P4 1.6a so the loudest fan in my case is the one on my visiontek GeForce 3 Ti200. It's enough, in fact, to make the system audible which is completely unacceptable. It's a work machine too. So I unplugged the fan. I didn't replace it with a passive one, I just unplugged it. It's never locked or given me any artifacts for the three months that I've done it. That's one thing that you might want to consider.
Another is that I have removed this fan before to replace it (first was defective-visiontek sent me another) and the replacement is physically on but not plugged in. That tells me that there's not a heat problem after removing and replacing the GPU cooler.
Good luck and quiet computing!

another thing you might want to look at is an old video card. Those TNT2 M64s had tall passive heatsinks on them. Rip it off!

Thanks for the input.

To tell you the truth I did consider just unplugging the fan but wussed out.

Based on your experience though I'll give it a try!

What's the worse that can happen? My Geforce3 will melt down and give me an excuse to buy a Geforce4?????????

Are you suggesting one of those 110x100mm monsters for my GeForce3 Ti200?

For the price, I'd get one of those big guys and hacksaw it down to fit your GPU. They give it a good lapping and slap a 50mm fan on it. It's only a buck! What's left over may be enough for some RAMsinks. ;)

Saw this a while ago, says it's a northbridge HS. By it's size, looks like it might work for passive cooling of the GPU. Or this, although it's not fanless. It has a 19.1 CFM / 32 db Panaflo FBA06A12H fan. Someone here modded a gainward gf3 with this HSF, do search for 'flowerman'. I think it was him.

Another thing to consider is getting a plain jane hsf combo for your geforce3 ti200 and undervolting the fan to 7v or 5v or so. At 5v the fan will be silent and will still move air over the HS. I got lucky when Fry's had its anniversary sale. Got myself a Geforce3 Ti200 with nothing but a giant passive HS. Works just fine.

I think this would be a good bet. A little expensive, but I would imagine it does the trick.

SVCompucycle has some nice chipset/video card coolers for $5-$10. Noise seems to be in the 26db range, a decent improvement over 30db.

edit: added svcompucycle link.

I had a new VisionTek GeForce 3 Ti200. After a month the fan started to make loud noises and a day or so later stopped altogher. So I called VisionTek and they sent out a new replacement fan. A month later the card the card went belly-up would only operate in a lo-res mode and the system board would not recognize it. It now is RMA'ed with VisionTek. Based on my experience, it would be best to stick with a quality hsf (but not necessarily the original fan). But then if you replace it, it could invalidate the warranty if they could tell it had been replaced, best to save original to swap bak in the board if it has to be returned.

the HS that "ubertek" link to will work, my roommate put one on his Ti200 and it works just as good, make sure you have decent case cooling though.
