I can already see how this will play out. Democrats will pass a weaker version of HR1. Republicans will sue anyway and the courts will drag it out either close to or pass 2022 forcing at least the midterms to be conducted with all voter suppression laws in place. Republican get back their majority and not only repeal HR1, but pass massive voter suppression at the federal level.

I feel obligated to point out that Biden can and will veto the bill in 2022 that Republicans will not be able to overwrite

wow.. total civics fail on my part

still think they will use the courts to tie up/neuter any laws passed to expand voter access till the 2022 midterms when they have a chance to pick up either the House or Senate.

Sometimes, we must stand back and take in the whole picture. What republican controlled states are now doing, and are hell bent on doing, directly reflects back on 1964 and LBJ and the signing of the civil rights act into law. What republican controlled states are now doing directly reflects back on MLK and all the countess efforts from MLK on advancing civil rights right up to his death. From American president Lincoln to American president LBJ to civil rights leader MLK, what republicans are now doing is to say NONE OF THAT MATTERS. THE PAST DOES NOT MATTER. Lincoln and freedom DOES NOT MATTER. Civil war and the North defeating the South DOES NOT MATTER. LBJ and the ink used to sign the 1964 LBJ civil rights bill DOES NOT MATTER.

People... what republicans are now doing and their attempts to do within all republican controlled states is to send one message across America, NONE OF THE PAST MATTERS. None of that progress America has made on civil rights and on the freeing of slaves and on the rights to vote, NONE OF THAT MATTERS.

LBJ? Doesn't matter....
Emancipation Proclamation of 1863? Doesn't matter....
Martin Luther King? Doesn't matter....
If what republicans are now doing across America were a fire in a building, every alarm would be ringing loud. Every American would be mad as hell, and every American would be paying attention.

I now realize something that should be horrifying to our democracy, that the spirt of Donald Trump went far far beyond Donald Trump. Republicans had already became the spirit of Donald Trump far before the physical appearance of Donald Trump. When Donald Trump entered the political stage, Donald Trump was nothing more than a mirror. A mirror, reflecting THE REPUBLICAN PARTY that was already Donald Trump before Donald Trump.

I think GA Republicans have miscalculated - their bill is so over the top and so transparently evil that I expect it to increase turnout just from people coming out to say ‘fuck you’. I also expect tons of people will try to get arrested by giving water to people in line.

Those fucking geniuses managed to sign it under a painting of a plantation too. Just look at the optics of this. Top notch work gentlemen.

The predicted response is black people just need to stop being lazy and show up election day wait 8 hours to vote and we don't need HR-1 because states rights. The right to vote dictates all other rights and must not be impeded. Conservatives and Dixiecrats in history have always come up with creative ways to stymie the black vote. This has to end now!

Bunch of white guys in front of a plantation while a black lawmaker outside the door is arrested just for demanding transparency and to witness the signing.

You know some people say Black people deserve reparations and I think I might have a way to make it happen.

For the next 100 years, at least, I think the state of Georgia should be ran by Black people (and if they decide, other minorities) at every level of government, country up to congressional seats and judges.

I think white people and white politicians especially have done enough harm and are no longer worthy of working for the government.

If more states follow in their lead then they too should be handed over to Black people.

Good idea? Bad idea?

There are some parts of tbe new Georgia law that are OK. The requirement for ID seems unnecessary to me because, it is already required to even get a ballot.

Making the absentee ballots harder to use could backfire on the GOP since there probably won't be a pandemic during most future elections and their own voters will be subject to the same more complex process.

The silence from the rest of the GOP, politicians and voters alike confirms that they are just fine with this attack on democracy and naked power grab. Jesus taught them to never give food or water to anyone, so screw them. Notice they did a "closed-door signing". These restrictions serve no purpose other than to make it harder and keep voters from exercising their constitutional right to vote

If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

That, or you'll do about a year or so in a Georgia state penitentiary and bunk with a horney guy named Biff.

One or the other. Same dif.

Lindsay Graham said: When Biden calls the voter suppression laws racist, he’s just playing the race card.

I can’t believe we get called racist every time we do something racist! It’s so unfair!

I have an honest question. Do African Americans in Georgia have a hard time getting a state issued ID? That is the only part of the law that I do find racist. Isn't it a law where if you are too poor, you cam get a state issued license free of charge?

3% of Georgia voters reportedly currently lack that ID, disproportionately minorities.

However, the less discussed, and far bigger risk: The partisan State Election Board (and now republican-legislature controlled) board has been empowered to remove bipartisan county election boards and replace them with a single (republican-appointed) elections manager to oversee county elections - effectively at the whim of the legislature.

Imagine in 2020, as all of those republican legislators that were loudly claiming the election was stolen - having had the power to kick out the bipartisan county election board, and instead appoint a highly partisan career republican election manager to run all rules and management for collecting, processing, and counting of ballots (or not counting of ballots) in Atlanta.

Setting aside the Supreme Court ruling about stuff like this.
My main concern with IDs required is who decides if an ID is legit or not legit?
